MLB Joe Schobert to test FA market

Speaking Tuesday, Browns GM Andrew Berry said impending free agent MLB Joe Schobert has "earned the right to test the market."

Translation, the Browns are not currently close to meeting Schobert's asking price. Berry did say the sides will talk at the Combine. The No. 99 overall pick of the 2016 draft is coming off a play-making 2019, though one where he actually earned negative marks from Pro Football Focus. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports "half a dozen teams or more could be interested" in the 26-year-old. He has been an every-down player for three seasons.

I read 'MLB' as 'Major League Baseball' and began to be very confused for about 30 seconds.

Who is doing what now?

Is this about baseball?

People from Cleveland are typically champions at being losers

Have literally never heard of this guy. Id rather draft a LB.

That says more about you than it does Schobert, though I agree with the second part of your post.

He’s a good player and has been since his rookie year.

So, you don't watch college football or the NFL?

I have a buddy who knows Schobert going all the way back to his days at Wisconsin, and he said Schobert would be interested in signing with the Chiefs, but only if his free agency news thread receives double the posts that Bashaud Breeland's received...

That's just what I heard. Take it or leave it.

Just quickly looking over his stats and sure he racks up the tackles, but over 4 years hes only recorded 15 TFL and almost half (7) came this year in a contract year. DJ had 18 TFL in his 3rd year in the league. Id have to actually see how he plays, but hed more than likely be the best LB on this team, which isn't saying much.

Interesting that PFF lists Schobert at 41 on their list of top NFL free agents.

Quote:

41. LB Joe Schobert
There’s been a distinct line between Schobert’s play in the run game (where he’s graded at 55.0 or below over the last two years) and in coverage (where he graded at an excellent 87.7 in 2018 and a solid 67.6 last year). He finished 2019 with four interceptions and four pass breakups, and he’s transitioned nicely from college pass-rusher to valuable coverage linebacker. In a new system, that pass-rushing ability could come in handy, as he only rushed the passer 62 times last season after rushing over 100 times in his previous two years as a starter.
Joe had 103 tackles in 2018 and 133 tackles in 2019. If you watch several of the Cleveland Brown games, you will see that PFF is right. He's better against the pass than he is the run. With KC's offense putting up points, that might be OK to have a ILB that can cover the pass.

His price might be out of our reach. Spotrac.com estimates the market value for ILB Blake Martinez to be $16 million per year on a 5 year deal. That figure seems high to me but even if Joe Schobert is way below that at 4 year, $10 million per year, the Chiefs don't have that kind of cap room.

I think Chiefs go draft or at least a cheaper option free agent for ILB.

Ah middle linebacker. All I know is Billy Joe Hobert jumped off the Tallahatchie bridge.
