Eating food past the "best by" date. Do you?
As you can tell by my CP handle, I'm a fan of thrill seeking, risk-taking and general daredevilism when there's a carefully planned approach.
I just ate yogurt with an August 10 date on the side. It was as single-serve, unopened Chobani Blueberry that was in my fridge the entire time I've owned it. Visual inspection showed some clear liquid at the top, smell was normal, taste was normal. What's your take? Daredevil factor from 1-10 (1 being wet-Charmin safe and 10 being "hold my beer") am I going to live? BTW do you eat food past the due date? What's your policy? |
if its less then a week, yes, if its more, then not a chance! lol

I think there's a window of opportunity for a few days - sometimes weeks. There's quite a bit of science involved. I find if something is undisturbed it'll present you a larger gap of opportunity to plow whatever food item it may be.

It depends on what it is really. I will eat canned foods that are months past expiration. I will eat dry cereal that is past the date too. But more perishable things like meat, dairy, etc I would be more leary of. I think that your yogurt would be okay. It smelled fine, tasted fine. It is probably good.

Meat I usually won’t.
Anything else in fridge usually 7-10 days past. Eggs can easily go a few weeks past. Packaged shelf goods can be months “expired” and I’ll eat them. |
Canned food is good for a few extra months. Milk not so much.
They need to put two dates on the label. a "best by" date and a "becomes poison" date. |
I buy bread and sometimes it lasts me past the expiry date. I just put it in the freezer till night and I leave it over the counter and let it defrost during the night. Next morning its sitting there ready for breakfast.

I'd give this a 3.

Sounds like a bad way to die.

It's just like the expiration date on medicine. It's the date for end of liability of whoever made it. A lot of stuff is good past it's date but I wouldn't want to be responsible for that canned ham that expired 3 years ago that made you sick.

If it passes the eye and smell test, sure... its not hard to tell when somethings gone bad

In my pantry I have a can of Campbell's Wonton soup that was purchased on Oct 5, 1980.
Thoughts? |
