Used car market

I've been thinking about getting myself a new ride. Right now I could sell my Charger for right at, if not slightly below what I paid for it nearly 4 years ago. (Might not get quite that much out of it, but it would be in the ballpark, and yes, it's a unicorn)

Of course if I sell, I'm delving into that inflated used car market to try and find another ride.

Looking for something with a reasonable amount of power. 4 doors (preferably, but not a deal breaker.) No Yukons.

Give me some suggestions.

Why selling your current car?

PM Burt.

stanleychief 10-15-2021 01:02 PM

The used car market is really strange right now. I've seen cases where the same make and model car is selling for the same price new as it is used!

I bought a car two years ago that is now worth 25% more than I paid for it. As tempting as it is to trade it in for something else, anything I'd trade it for would also be overpriced.

Ideally, if you could go without a car, it would be best to straight out sell it and wait until things go back to normal. Of course, it's difficult to predict when that would be.

$2k to 3k more than 3 months ago. And once again, we are expecting this to last 8 to 18 months!

I want a Charger Scat Pack. Under 40k. No higher than 30k miles. Don't care about the year.

Or a 2018+ Mustang GT Premium. Same restrictions.

If you have debt, sell the Charger and buy a used car for half the money you sell it for. Pay off debt with the rest of the money.

2018 Dodge Caravan GT should do the trick

prhom 10-15-2021 08:04 PM

I was considering selling my second vehicle, a Dodge Durango, to take advantage of high prices for used vehicles. Then I get woken last night by the cops telling me someone just ran into the back of it while it was just parked in the parking lot. Now I have to deal with their insurance to get it fixed before I can unload it…

Going to have hit the guardrail on both sides to get a car totaled these days.

2bikemike 10-16-2021 07:24 AM

I just sold my 2012 FJ Cruiser for 25,000. With 90k miles. I paid 31,000 brand new. I had removed the back seat and fabricated a flat deck to better carry stuff and to sleep in the back when hunting and off roading. The tires were about gone and the windshield needed replaced. I did have and gave them all the seat parts to be reinstalled if they so choose.

Freaking crazy days!

Yeah, FJ's break the bank. Those were a very good investment.

LoneWolf 10-16-2021 09:33 AM

I don’t think the chip shortage is going to last much longer than 2nd Qtr next year. As soon as new car inventories get back to normal, used car prices will come down. Sell your car, take the profits, and bum rides from family and friends until May 2022.

Just sold my 1999 Dodge Ram Cummins diesel 4x4 for $17,500. Just before Covid my highest offer was $11k

Eureka 10-16-2021 01:30 PM

Just sold my 2000 Acura Integra with 207,000 miles for 3K. It was a manual so that made it more desirable. It was in fair condition and ran great. Maybe, I should've asked for more $$.

I got 30 text messages, multiple emails and lots of phone calls within two days after placing an add on CL. Placed the Add Tuesday evening and had it sold by Thursday. That was a unique car selling experience and I was a car salesman for over a decade.

I sold my neighbors 13 Impala last month. Had it on FB for quite some time...nothin. 2 days on CL and it sole to the first test driver.

My neighbor has a 2009 Accord EX coupe, 6 speed manual 115k miles for $5,000. That's a ****ing steal in this market.

Congrats! What was the price (if it is not a secret)? I drive Impala but consider a slightly bigger car. Also I had a lot of repairs recently, forgot to check auto parts data and ordered a wrong piece. I guess now i had enough troubles with the current vehicle, time for a change

Nothing makes girls panties drop faster than a mid 90s V6 Camaro.

I can just see me driving into the Arrowhead parking lot with that bad boy.

I accidently mentioned in front of my buddies girl that his pimped out 2012 Camaro was a panty dropper. I didn't realize she was listening and then she asked me what that meant.

I think she didn't like him owning that car after that lol.

Anyone on here ever used Carvana? Curious about your thoughts, dealings with them after the fact, etc.

I've never actually used them, but my experience is their quotes on trade-ins are awfully low (confirmed by trading in multiple vehicles elsewhere for significantly more), and there are a lot of bad stories out there that seem to go beyond the typical people complaining on the internet.

I've heard some of those same things. Just was curious if we had any CP-member experiences with them.

I sold my car to them, for quite a lot more than was offered by other dealers, and about what I expected to be able to sell it for if I listed on Craigslist. It was pretty quick and easy, you sign a power of attorney for the car rather than signing over the title. The guy spent about 15 seconds looking at the car and then loaded it up and drove away, the money was deposited the next day or so.

they're losing all the money they got from investors. When it first came around they were spending a ton of money buying cars.

When I spent 3-4 months looking for a car to buy, bought one in late November, I checked many of the online retailers. Carvana and Car Max both seemed 10-15% or more higher on every car I checked. Never saw a good deal. A car valued at 19K everywhere else would be priced at 22K. A 25K car would be around 28.5-29K. Carvana was a little higher than Car Max.

I personally don't think they are good value. :hmmm:

displacedinMN 01-19-2023 02:15 PM

Also heard Carvana is financially unstable. What ever that means for business.
They seem like a car broker more than sales. Buy low, sell high.

Yep, and with the way the used car market has been the last couple of years, they're going to be hurting for a while as the market calms down. They'll likely be taking some big losses.

backinblack 01-19-2023 02:35 PM

Yeah the scuttlebutt going around car circles is Carvana won't be around much longer, and I have heard they are really bad with titles. They sell cars without titles, they won't hand over titles when cars are paid off, they don't forward titles to lean holders etc. As you can imagine this has led to Carvana being the subject of numerous lawsuits, and some states apparently have tried to bar them from selling cars in their state.

notorious 01-19-2023 02:39 PM

The auction inventory is massively over stocked. Banks are trying to move cars at their book value instead of wholesale, so it's piling up.

When banks decide to eat the huge loss and sell at wholesale, you will see the auction cars start to funnel back to the lots.

Used care prices are about to take a dip. Some dude tried to tell me otherwise on here last year yet here we are.

Bugeater 01-19-2023 03:05 PM

My son bought car from Carvana, thankfully it went well and he received the title. I have no idea what kind a deal he got on it, but is was back in the used car crisis and I doubt there were any good deals on anything. The only problem is came from an area that didn't see snow, so he had to buy all weather tires for it.
