Chiefs D Coordinators...

Please rank the top 3 D Coordinators from any point in Chiefs history. Please note: I am only asking about Chiefs D Coordinators- I am not interested in coordinators from other teams.

milkman 02-19-2007 09:48 PM

Hank Stram acted as both OC and DC when he was head coach, I believe, so he would be #1.

Bill Cowher is #2.

After that, the rest suck.

el borracho 02-19-2007 09:54 PM

If I am reading correctly, Cowher's defenses were ranked
1 in '89
16 in '90
18 in '91
and 5 in '92

el borracho 02-19-2007 09:57 PM

Cunningham's defenses
4 in '95
17 in '96
15 in '97
9 in '98

Wasn't old enough to understand football till 1988 so...

1. Cowher
2. Gun-because he is better than GRob and Kurt(not saying much)
3. Kurt-I guess

Am I forgetting someone? Seems like after Cowher its been a downhill slide.

Your point?

I should tell you that stats don't impress me.
I make judgements by what I see.

Didnt Cowhers D give up the passing record to Warren Moon?

Three C's:

Corey

Cunningham

Cowher

Most would probably rank him second behind Cowher and, speaking about them only as coordinators, Cowher and Cunningham are pretty close. The D has greatly improved under Cunningham and will be even better this year when we replace some of the trash at defensive tackle.

So I guess my point is that Cunningham is one of the few coaches we have who isn't in over his head.

jlscorpio 02-20-2007 03:50 AM

who was the old man between Cowher and Gun??? I think he DC'd for tha dolts after here.

jspchief 02-20-2007 07:48 AM

I believe Gun was a good coordinator for us in the 90s.

That doesn't necessarily mean he's still a good coach though. Look at Joe Gibbs. I think what Gunther did well in the 90s doesn't really work with today's offenses. Does that mean he can't adapt? Hard to say until he gets a chance. So far our defense has been steadily improving under him.

Personally I think the coaching part of a defense's success is over-rated anyway. Look at all the great DCs and a staple of their defenses is a great D-line.

nychief 02-20-2007 07:58 AM

Arnsparger
Cowher
Gun

I almost hate to say this, because im not a huge Gun fan, but to his credit: His D gave us less points to the Colts in the playoffs than the Ravens, Pats or Bears did...

gunther cunningham rules the world!!!!!!!!!!!

~just trying to follow the leading thread~

CoMoChief 02-20-2007 06:46 PM

I'd say Greg Robinson hands down was the best DC in Chiefs franchise history.

Rain Man 02-20-2007 10:02 PM

When did the coordinator systems come about? Did Hank Stram have a dedicated defensive coordinator in 1969? I'm just curious, because I suspect that coaching staffs have grown a lot in the past 20 years.
