Discussion: NSFW images in spoiler tags

Can we take a moment to seriously discuss posting NSFW and full nude images inside spoiler tags? I'm not talking about NSFW images in a thread clearly marked NSFW like the porn gif thread, but NSFW images popping up in threads like today's Tiffani Thiessen thread (just an example since it's fresh on my mind and is not marked NSFW).

Let's forget for a moment that posting pictures showing genitalia and nipples in general is against board policy and focus merely on the spoiler tags.

While the spoiler tags DO hide the image from view for someone walking by, they do nothing for someone whose IS folks at work peek behind the scenes. Spoiler tags only hide the image from view; the image still loads on the machine and its cache.

Am I the only person bothered by this? If I am, I'll shut up. But this is really becoming such a rampant practice, it makes me hesitant to peruse Chiefsplanet at work, even threads that should be safe to go in.

You should be working at work....problem solved.

Way to skirt the question.

People are allowed breaks, no? And I generally eat lunch at my desk. That hour is mine.

Did not know that.

I make it a point to stay out of the picture thread completely while I'm at work....but still.

Not an issue. Shouldn't work for Nazi's anyway.

Whenever I've brought this up in threads, everyone just acts like it isn't a big deal. It's a bannable offense, and I don't understand why it's not enforced.

Most IT folks will look the other way at a few bikinis, but we've got outright porn on this site.

007 01-29-2013 06:02 PM

I just set it to not show any images while at work so none of that crap preloads

I'm already in work mode... guess I may have to go a step further.

PaulAllen 01-29-2013 06:05 PM

It may be your lunch hour but you're still using company property. Use your phone for porn when you're at work dude, like the rest of us.

Yeah work mode isn't enough. You have to disable images completely.

Johnny Vegas 01-29-2013 06:08 PM

thats why smart phones should be used more often when at work to dodge all the nsfw all together. If you don't have one I really recommend getting one.

This is such a lame argument. Where I view the thread doesn't change the fact it's against terms of service. And my company has said they don't mind a little personal surfing as long as it's work safe.

chiefforlife 01-29-2013 06:10 PM

I am glad you started this thread!!

Because Im sick of you bitching about it in all the others. I think its fine, if you shouldnt be doing it at work, then dont.

007 01-29-2013 06:10 PM

I have all avatars, images and signatures turned off at work. Wish there was a way to have multiple settings based on location so I didn't need to change everything everyday.

BigRedChief 01-29-2013 06:11 PM

Sorry spoilers is enough. Just don't click on spoilers when you are at work. Or alter your personal board settings.

BlackHelicopters 01-29-2013 06:11 PM

I stay out of the pictures thread at work, period. Even some of the sigs, including mine, might be considered borderline NSFW. best policy, work while at work.

And when I GET HOME to peruse Chiefs Planet, I love the idea that I might get to see a cootchie or tit shot in any and all threads!

Wait. Since other people are doing things against the TOS, FMB should not surf CP on break, even though his company has said it is ok? So FMB is the bad guy? And the people violating the TOS are just fine? What am I missing? Or are you a Blackbob mult trying to contrary?

I have no problem with properly labeled threads, and even links that are labeled NSFW. That gives me a choice to see them. But when they show up in random threads, there's where I find a problem...

I'm actually interested in this discussion as well. It's come up from time to time among the mods, but I'm not sure we've even come up with a firm rule about it.

My general feeling is that NSFW images should be linked only and that the spoiler tag isn't a sufficient method of masking it, but I'm open to thinking about it differently.

That's all I really want. Enforcement of the existing rule or clarification that spoiler tags is A-OK.

I do think it is an interesting can of worms. While I can understand the OPs reasoning and it is sound, it would suck ass if enforced IMO.

bigbucks24 01-29-2013 06:19 PM

How about people like me that are on the road often and like to browse CP? Do i need to start bringing another laptop with me just so i can read CP? My company has no problem with using the work computer for personal use as long as it is SFW.

Those pictures have no place on this board outside the nudie thread in the pictures forum and even that says no nipples or clits.

Yeah, to clarify, it's the "girly pictures thread" not the "nudie pictures thread". Over time, the pics forum has grown to include those kinds of pics outside that thread, but even that's a somewhat newish occurrence.

The thing is, if your company is parsing HTML via proxy, the pictures are the least of your worries.

If someone were to post a NSFW link (perfectly within the rules) your IT could still catch that, figure out what it is, and you would be in trouble.

Also don't forget that every letter of text in the forum loads into your browser as well, so when people like me say **** you, you ****ing **** over and over again every ****ing day, that shows up too.

Quite honestly, if you're afraid your work is monitoring you, you probably shouldn't be on here AT ALL.

I really don't see the big deal if they warn with NSFW for the spoiler tag? Simple don't click on the NSFW spoiler at work.

Putting stuff like that in spoiler tags seems very similar to filter evasion to me. Links are one thing, embedding photos, even if they're hidden, is probably a line we shouldn't be crossing on here.

htismaqe 01-29-2013 06:29 PM

I think somebody needs to define "not safe for work".

Our corporate proxy does not allow us to download pictures of beer, for example.

For the longest time, my AVATAR (a bottle of Das Echte Schwaben Brau) was technically NOT SAFE FOR WORK.

Again, if your company is THAT uptight that an embedded graphic that you didn't even click on could be a potential problem for you, DON'T SURF CHIEFSPLANET WITH A COMPANY COMPUTER.

Quite frankly, if you work for a Fortune 500 publicly-traded company, surfing the Planet - SFW or not - is against company policy.

True enough. That said, a lot of IT departments will let bikini pics slide... throw in some full nudity and you've crossed a line.

Is Sorter's use of the spoiler tags earlier in this thread filter evasion?

DaFace 01-29-2013 06:31 PM

Here's a thought, with the caveat that I DON'T KNOW IF WE CAN MAKE THIS WORK.

I found another site out there in the world that has a NSFW tag. According to the description, it doesn't load the image until after the person clicks the link. This would also make sure that it's clear that this isn't a spoiler and is truly a way of masking the image.

Is that something that those against the spoiler route would be OK with?

(Other mods feel free to chime in on this as well, either publicly or privately.)

If you don't realize it then take it from me and htismage. Your work computer caches EVERYTHING on this website. If your company has a strict internet use policy, best to wait till your off work or on your smartphone to visit the site.

As long as it doesn't load the image (does more than just mask it), I think that would be fine.

So you're telling me that I should be looking at NSFW spoilers because my tech people think I'm looking at it anyway?

Well OK Then...

That looks like a viable option

No, I could give a shit on my home computer. It's an example.

Then why even say it?

I can totally understand not wanting to have pics with graphic nudity stuck in the cache of your work PC, possibly without you even knowing it.

I think we need to differentiate between things like nude pictures and pictures with the word **** in them.

That's just me.
