Amid nationwide protests over systemic racism and police brutality that were brought to light once again by George Floyd’s death last week, Broncos coach Vic Fangio said Tuesday, “This is a societal issue that we all have to join in to correct.”

“I was shocked, sad and angry when I saw what the policemen did to a handcuffed George Floyd on his stomach that led to his death,” Fangio said in a prepared statement during a Zoom conference with the media. “(Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin) should be punished to the fullest extent of the law for the crimes he has been charged with, in addition to being charged with treason for failing to uphold the badge of the uniform he was entrusted with.”

Fangio’s remarks came on the heels of a pair of team meetings earlier in the day in which team president Joe Ellis urged Broncos players to use their platforms to speak out against racism and discrimination, adding that the team had a responsibility to do so.

I have no idea what the context was or what prompted him to say that. You are absolutely right about how being PC is used to silence people. Not just silence people but to categorize them. Both political extremes do it too. What is politically correct for one group is not for the other. There’s little real thought or discourse in politics anymore. The NFL is no different from your standard office environment. The boss has their favorites. Employees viewed as "team" players play above others based on contract, money or relationship to the boss or the team/company. People move on because they feel/have been mistreated, underpaid etc.

The American military since it was forced to racially integrate has embraced the concept of meritocracy. It is the closest to a meritocracy that's ever existed and its not a true meritocracy.

So what's the endgame for the NFL? How many black coaches and black upper management members are required? Is there a target number?

Bieniemy leads an offense to historical records and a Super Bowl. One of the best resumes an emerging OC can have.

Andy Reid has the best coaching tree reputation of any coach in the NFL. His guys get jobs. Period. I doubt Eric Bieniemy could be an established coaching product who doesn't nail his interviews. Listen to his press conferences. He's pretty clear about communicating his goals and his plans to NFL media and fans.

I'm glad Bienemy hasn't been hired because that means we get to keep him. The guy is a great motivator and a player's coach. Always enjoyable listening to his press interviews. Teams out there are plain dumb and hire unproven coaches. I would be more upset of losing Bienemy than Kafka.

Just to add to this, why do people assume he didn't get hired because he's black? Any chance it could of been one of a million other reasons? Like they wanted a different head coach instead ? Gosh that would that would be strange .....

I think the only knock against Bienemy is that he is just a product of the Andy Reid system and it wasn't his creation.

But that is also his best selling point, too. He knows the system and how to implement it. I think it depends on who's doing the hiring what they think about how that will translate to their team.

I'm not going to say there is no chance he hasn't been hired due to racism. The people that do the hiring are likely going to relate more to someone of their own race, and almost all of the billionaire owners are white guys. They just need to be aware of their potential bias going into things. Just like if I went and tried to get a job at a 90% black owned business, I would expect there would be some inherent bias towards me. How could there not be? We are not all the same. We relate to each other based on socioeconomic, cultural, and other social factors. Race really isn't even a big part of it IMO, it's those socioeconomic, cultural and other social factors that cause the bias. Such is life.

I will say at least with 95% of business, any bias or "racism" isn't done with intention of evil. It just happens. It's something we need to fix, though. Definitely.

Agree on players, although look how long it took to get black quarterbacks and middle linebackers. Stereotyping dictated position biases for a long time. I think the same has been true in hiring coaches among certain owners and gms, but it's slowly changing.

As a guy who is only a few years younger than Vic, I would advise you to rethink "safe assumptions". Life experience will teach you that ;)
