Does that quest begin with a crowbar and a stocking cap?

Valiant 02-15-2008 08:23 PM

Ahahah.. looks like PS3 even has to play catchup to the 360 in planet threads also..

Hey but at least you won the media war on Hddvd vs. Bluray.. You at least won one battle even though you are losing the war for the Console War...

unlurking 02-16-2008 12:09 AM

I have a PS3, but have not yet played online. Current title list...

Oblivion (loved it on 360 which died AGAIN causing me to buy PS3)
CoD3
Motorstorm
Fight Night Round 3
NHL 2k7
Blazing Angels

For BR content, I have the Resident Evil trilogy (hmm, Mira!), and the Planet Earth series. I CANNOT overstate how ****ing BEAUTIFUL this fucking series is. Absolutley incredible. If you ask me, Planet Earth ALONE is worth buying a PS3 or any other BR player.

Rather boastful comment don't you think? Sony was counting on the format "battle" in order to win the console war. Whether you agree with it or not, the developers WILL make games for the dominant system. If this is not an anomaly and becomes a trend, you will definitely see the shift.

And in case you are wondering, I bought a 360 on release day (and replaced it 3 fuckING TIMES) before buying my son a PS3 for XMas (which I only bought because I couldn't find a Wii). So no, I am not a PS3 fanatic.

Not really boastful, just fact.. While the PS3 finally won a month ahead of 360 it is still getting its ass kicked in games and accessories sold, because most of those sales are people buying it for a bluray player..

Winning the format war means jack and shit when it comes to console games.. There is still no practical use in this console war for their use on games.. UT and DMC4 used the extra storage for the format and you get to see download times and long loads to play.. The hardware for both consoles cannot handle it for games to play fluidly..

Developer's are making games on the console that is easier to code for.. This is why so many games are being pushed or held back on both systems.. The PS3 is a bitch to code for.. GTA4 and others have been done forever but won't be released because of Sony.. Developers are publicly bashing Sony on their system because of the coding, some have dropped Sony all together..

The only reason right now for the slight shift you see is because Bluray won the battle, people now know which player to buy.. It is the cheap bluray player called a PS3...

I have to wonder about your 360's though.. There were tons of problems with them from launch.. But 3 replacements makes me wonder about environmental issues: too much dust, faulty power surge, brownouts that most surges will not stop.. I have my original 360 from launch date still.. We also have every console in our house that we play, I also help sell them.. (well I try and not sell the PS3 just out of spite to TinyEvel pimping them all the time) But if someone wants a bluray player I sell them a Sony..

unlurking 02-16-2008 01:08 AM

The 360 is the ONLY console I have ever had die. In fact, I still have a PS1 and the original Xbox (no longer hooked up, but for some reason I can't bring myself to throw them away).

And regarding environmental issues, if my surge protectors cannot protect the 3 laptops, 3 desktops, 8 servers, and 3 network appliances I own, why are they still up? The 360 is pure CRAP. The software titles available for it are 10 times better than anything else out there, but the hardware is still CRAP.

As far as titles being the primary sale venue, I agree, but only to a certain extent. The Wii is outselling the 360, and it's a POS as well. Fun to play? Yes, for a little while. Long list of engaging anf cutting edge titles? Yeah, right.

Eleazar 02-16-2008 01:20 AM

COD4 - great game, lots of fun
Assassin's Creed - pretty cool, kinda repetitive after a while but decent
NCAA football
Warhawk - cool online only game, worth a look. don't have the headset though.
Dirt - it's alright, but no real multiplayer kind of sucks.
Motorstorm - simple arcade-style racing. great looking game, had a good time with it.
FIFA - best game in the series that I've played. I like the game mode where it locks you on one player and you see the down the field view. Wish there was some kind of superstar mode like Madden has.

Waiting for Gran Turismo and Metal Gear. Might get Unreal Tournament soon.

Anyone played DMC yet?

Warhawk is pretty good IMO. Get the headset and go into with a buddy. It's best if you have someone to run around with.

The Metal Gear download looks insane.

anyone have trouble with PSN connectivity? I went wireless with my PS3. When I initially set everything up I would randomly get dumped pretty consistently from PSN. And I wasn't able to update my Warhawk game to even play it. I had to disable UPnP IIRC on my Linksys wireless router, and everything seems to be working fine, but I'm currently sitting at NAT 3 and "could" experience issues with chat, voice, etc while in game according to the connection test.

But I would recommend both Warhawk and Unreal Tournament. Dogfighting in Warhawk is a blast and you can't beat the insta-gib modifier in UT.

FIFA 08 is fun
NHL 08 is fun
NBA 2k8 is alright but I haven't played too much yet

Im looking to buy a new game today. Sounds like Ishould get Warhawk.

I have a linsys wireless router also and haven't experienced any issues. I played games both wired directly and wirelessly and didn't notice any difference. I haven't played online in a while, been too busy, so if something new is going on then it's possible I haven't noticed it.

I'm sure you probably tried this, but if you haven't, sometimes you can switch channels on the router, maybe you are getting interference or something?

im actually considering geting a ps3,my 360 just died on me for a second time and im so fed up with it. I also mainly play sports games anyways,so im not to worried about the lack of games out for it. Has anyone here that has a ps3 had any problems with theirs??? i dont wanna sink a bunch of money into another system only to have it take a crap on me 7 months later.

Less than 2 months & my new PS3 dies... not uncommon

Had my new PS3 (80GB) for 50 days and the blu-ray reader/player crapped out. Sony "Customer No-Service" reps are poorly trained. But despite three frustrating conversations, they mailed me a box and I sent them the unit in their box. Now I get the pleasure of waiting an indeterminable amount of time for a "refurbished" unit to arrive. This problem is all over the internet, yet their reps had never heard about it. Odd. If you have the poor misfortune of getting error code 80010514, look forward to giving your thumbs at least a month (if not 2) of vacation from your favorite games. Other than that  the system is great. Flexible, multifunctional, and amazing graphics on the HD television. Movies are great on blu-ray, but also great on DVD as the console does a wonderful job of upscaling.

yeah, i was worried about the lacking of games issue (which is why i waited so long to get one) but i think that once the PS2 cools down Sony can then focus on the PS3 as it DESERVES and the games will come a running.

p.s. and to avoid the crap out issues...i just bought an extended warrenty. as such my machine will never die but its better safe then sorry right?

You think they are not focusing on the PS3?? People do not read threads thoroughly.. The PS3 is a good machine, but the games are not running to them because no developer likes the PS3 coding setup.. It takes way to long for them to make games good on it.. PS3 will become what you are wanting when they release the PS4..

i could see how people think that but your forgetting what happened when PS1 was around and PS2 just came out.....it was the fad for every developer to claim "too cumbersome" of a language to program games in. then they (the Dev's) got use to it and churned them out one after the next  it just takes time bro ;)

FTR i DO read threads. again they are focusing on ps3 but its not 100% .. if it was why would SCEA let so many exclusive deals slip through there hands????? GTA4???? Devil May cry 4????? Assasians creed????

all lost exclusivity rights on the part of Sony. it may take a while for them to do it but thats only b/c its new. im sure each time a new system comes out theres a new learnign curve for each language thats created for that system. its not like every system is coded in VB, C++, HTML, and JAva. they (if im not mistaken) create there own languages just like Nintendo and anyone else in the console business. as developers make more games they will get more familiar with it. also i thin ka direct quote from SCEA (sony) is that the Ps3 is going to have a 10 year (cant remember if it was 10 but its a very long life cycle...i,e, no ps4 for a while) so the games will come its just been slow b/c slow console sales = low attachment rates which then = low profits. supply and demand bro :) more demand shifts the supply and demand curves thus making it a more profitable business scenerio and thus "mo games mo games more....games" ;)

The PS2 flew off the shelfs and had a killer lineup just a year later..

http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/04/d...nd-the-corner/

Don't bother picking up a PS3, PS4 is right around the corner

In response to some fairly bogus claims by an "analyst" last week, Sony has come out of the woodwork to state that yes, it is indeed planning to build a PlayStation 4, but not until at least 2010. Therefore, by taking this quote completely out of context, we have deduced that there's a mere three year wait for some next-next-gen goodness, which can be easily tide over by FFXII, GTA and SotC. However, were we to actually do our job, we would let you know that in the interim Sony is planning on firmware upgrades for the PS3 to expand media center capability, allow third party applications, and to support third party controllers similar to that of the Wii. "To say that there will be no PS4 because of a management change is a bit far fetched," says Paul Holman. He also went on to mention the possibility of a keyboard and mouse bundle with the PS3, predict at least 20 new games for the European PS3 launch, and to tout that schmancy Cell processor under the hood. We're standing by for a PR cleanup crew any moment now.

The PS2 flew off the shelfs and had a killer lineup just a year later completely opposite of PS3.. By the time they catch up they will be launching their next system.. I hope they do not pull a N64 or gamecube and keep pushing back the games until they are put on a new system..

Eleazar 02-17-2008 09:05 AM

Quote:

According to Reuters, iSuppli estimates that this recent momentum will indeed continue through 2008, and Sony should sell around 10.2 million units worldwide before the year is over. This would effectively double the installed user base (it would rise to over 20 million), and in the long-term, they believe the PS3 will have a user base of around 38.4 million by 2011. If this happens, and their other projections for the 360 and Wii are accurate, the PlayStation 3 will be the "industry leader" in total installed units. The Wii should maintain its lead in 2008 by selling 12.2 million units, but it's no surprise to anyone that the overall Nintendo momentum has begun to slow a bit. Microsoft had a one-year head-start, but at this point, many predictions say the PS3 will eventually surpass the 360.

We wonder if iSuppli is taking the blockbuster PS3 software into account; the titles that should drop this year, like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy XIII, etc. All of these are bona-fide system sellers, so they'll definitely help move PS3 units. Either way, the system is definitely poised to make a big run in 2008.

I want his, becuase first off its new. 2ndly he doesnt use it as he may be in prison for a bit. lol 3rdly, his has the ps1 and ps2 emulator chip inside. 6 months is to long of a wait when i want to get it now. lol

If it's the 80GB PS3 it DOESN'T have the emulator chip in it. Only the 60GB has the PS2 chipset which guarantees compatibility. The 80GB only has software compatibility and doesn't work for all games.

You can find whether a game is backward compatible here:

HEre's my response to some of the above threads:

Valiant: PS4? Not likely on shelves for another 7 to 9 years at best. PS2 was around, what, 10 years before PS3? They make these things to go way into the future, that;s why PS3 got off to the slow start: ahead of its time. Now looking back 18 months, you can see that.
The 60g actually had hardware for backwards compatibility. That's why it's 100 percent compatible with PS2. The 80G has a chip, but they activate all the most popular games for that. So, you could say that basically any game you'd WANT to play, chances are it will work. check the link in Cochise's response to see if a specific title is compatible. Also, as new games come out they add them through system updates.

As far as another price drop is concerned? I wouldn't hold my breath. They already dropped them each $100, and the 60G was never reduced in price after it was discontinued, so even if they come out with new versions, I would not think the 40/80G will be dropped to clear them out. THe margins on consoles are not very high.

Maybe you can answer this.. Why is Sony getting rid of the 80gig?? We no longer sell the 80gig and I cannot find another skew for anything else coming in new to replace it.. So is Sony giving up on backwards compatibility to keep the price outlook low to consumers or decided that most do not use it?? I heard rumors of a 120gig version but could not find any skews/model numbers or upc's in our companies ordering database..

Since it's only software compatibility, how would it save them any substantial amount of money?

My guess is that research showed no one was using it.

Not quite.

PS2 came out late 2000.

PS3 came out late 2006

PS1 came out fall 1995

So it appears the span between systems is about 5-6 years.

no, thats the first thing they looked at in regards to cost cutting.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/05/so...-the-40gb-ps3/

In separate interviews today both Sony UK boss Ray Maguire and Sony Europe spokesman Nick Sharples spoke about how the 40GB PS3 lacking backwards compatibility is fine. How is it fine? Maguire tells Eurogamer that by this Christmas the PS3 will have a whopping 65 games and so they feel "there's sufficient choice in the marketplace and that we're still better off using that money that we'd put into backwards compatibility in either investing in new games or using that money to help support bringing the price down." Meanwhile, Sharples tells GameDaily, "We have made clear on many occasions that our priority is on developing innovative new features and services for PS3 and not on backwards compatibility."

We really hate to do this, but we swear Sony must honestly think consumers and the press have the memories of goldfish. Let's just take it back to the PlayStation brand for two seconds. Sony's own Phil Harrison clearly and distinctly said in a 2006 interview with GamePro, "Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer. And access to the library of content people have created, bought for themselves, and accumulated over the years is necessary to create a format. PlayStation is a format meaning that it transcends many devices -- PSOne, PS2, and now PS3." A little over a year and "core values" go right out the window. Who needs backwards compatibility anyway when you've got 65 games to sell?

http://www.businessweek.com/globalbi...n_id=rss_daily

is another GREAT article regarding sonys costs and plans.

You must work at Best Buy.

I believe it has to do with packaging. the 80G is still in production.

No, another retailer.. And the 80gig is marked as out of production.. That and all the rumors that Sony is getting ready to get rid of it, solely for the 40gig version..

Figure you might know.. Guess they don't tell you guys anything either..

Keep working on the price.. start at 200dollars.. Because you can get a used system on ebay with 4controllers and a couple games for 300 dollars..

Nope 60gig version.. There are literally dozens of 60gig versions used on ebay with extra controllers from 230ish -400+ dollars..

There are broken ones on there also, which people buy and then swap out at Walmart..

None of the PS3 guys would find it there.

Sure-Oz 02-19-2008 09:04 PM

I saw at a local blockbuster had a packaged ps3 deal...

80gig ps3
20 weeks of free movie/game rentals
1 remote control for the ps3
1 motorstorm game
1 bluray movie (i think it was surfs up)
1 hdmi cable

for $599...

that is the only 80 gig vers. ive seen for sale. Is that a deal, i didn't look into how many rentals you can have for 20 weeks but whatever...

I agree it is way too high as well...

i believe it is 1 free movie/game rental a week for 20 weeks.

I mainly want the ps3 for the BR player, 40 more gigs of space isnt that big of a deal right? I know it isn't backwards compatible, which is kindve annoying but i dont have ps2 games anymore anyway

na, the 40 is good bro. besides its easy to swap the HD's if need be. im ok with 40 (what i have) but the 20 would worry me. id be afriad of running out of space to fast with all the game installations and what not.

Appreciate it, it would mainly be used as a BR player anyway but if i get the knack for gaming id like it to have decent space, sounds good. I got an xbox360 for my gaming needs, thanks to a friend.

hmm, then if its just a cheap BR player you might be ok but...if theres the chance that youd go gaming then yes the 40 would be optimum. I have a Wii, 360 and ps3 (not in that order though, i just got my ps3 last week I LOVE IT!! over my 360.) if i were you and you simply love your 360 then do not attempt games on PS3.....you will be hooked!

if only Bioshock was pn ps3 .... it would be unstoppable. BIOSHOCK is simply the best game to come out in the last 3 years. (sorry for changing the subject ;) )

you get some PS3 REP for consideration of joining the darkside!!

40g has wireless too (i only know that b/c its what I use ;) ) as for the rest you are correct but for the average non-tech average Joe (me) those items don’t play much in the decision making process IMHO. I did consider those when I pondered which model to get and i decided on the 40 b/c the card readers and extra slots would sit there unused. I have my PC for the card readers for video and pictures, I don’t have a PSP so I don’t need to worry about memory stick readers, the most ill use is two controllers at once and or one controller with a headset.

i think the way SCEA is marketing the PS3 is very annoying b/c they almost push consumers away from the high end models. i hate bundles and i hate making decisions as to which model to get. either way you look at it the consumer always seems to lose because they (we) either pay too much (for items that go unused or space on a bigger HDD that is unused) or not enough (as you do need to have the extra USB's, card readers, backwards compatibility, etc..) for the system that you wanted in the first place.

call me old fashion but i am loving my PS3 but the decision making process involved in getting it left me with a "bad taste of cigarettes and hookers in my mouth" (Family guy quote)

Yeah i want it mainly for the cheap BR player and being the most updateable one to date. I do have a 360 cause my friend "loaned" it to me and all of his games. Basically i will own it since he plays cpu games and he never touches the xbox. I will likely play some games on ps3 as well, the 40gig vers. seems more for me as well cause i dont need to play games ALL the time, but need enough space so if i want to play a game and am hooked. I am excited to get one hopefully within the next paycheck or 2. I was going to get an 80gig, but its way too expensive and i dont think i will be a HARDCORE gamer, even though i do play the xbox quite a bit.

I am ready to own a ps3/br player for sure. Can't wait to get it...

Well it should get better for you even though Tiny will not admit it.. They are getting rid of the bigger model and going with the 40 gig.. Just like the PS2 you will be able to buy it in two colors.. And depending on how bluray sales go(ie if cheaper stand alones come out and start to detract people from buying the PS3 they will drop the price)..

Then all we need is Bioshock 2 and AC 2 lol

BR is the main reason why i am getting a PS3. The format war is over and digital downloads of movies are still years away, so why not.

my god man Bioshock 2 is the most wonderful / scary thing on this earth. it could easily be the best and worst game of all time trumping ET and Ishtar (yes i know ishtar wasnt a game) i still hate ppl who dis bioshock..that games storytelling and gameplay is truly innovative.

xbarretx 02-20-2008 04:35 PM

so the two games i got ATM are COD4 and Genji. anyone recommend anything? i wish some good RPG's were out for it but i have to wait for FFXiii i guess. what about DMC or Drakes fortune? (sp?) maybe even burnout??? throw me a fricken bone here ;)

Buck 02-21-2008 12:02 AM

Warhawk - Fun Multiplayer only game, Rent if you are into Online Gaming

Resistance Fall of Man - Haven't played too much and it seems difficult, going to have to dedicate a long session to this game, RENT

------------------------------

yeah cheaper BR dvd's would be nice....

i think the BR is a huge boost for PS3...as its the cheapest player out there! i just wish Sony would quit with the PS2 games already!

and wow i just got an email from MS saying that GoW2 is comming in Nov!!! talk about sweet and just in time for the holidays. this season should rock for games on all platforms.

LOL he works for them for advertising and cannot say anything even if he does know.. Its alright, when I find out info I usually put it out there.. Getting rid of the PS2 support would help imo, but they sell a assload of PS2's right now and it is pure profit for the company compared to losing their ass off with PS3.. Maybe next year or later this year you will see them ramp down on production of the PS2's..

I want one soon. Not because I am a gamer, I want a BR player. My son getting to play games on it is just a bonus...
