Damn, a true American troubadour. I have a few of his albums, will have to dig a couple out and spin them tonight.

I really have gotten into his stuff the last 2 years, had tickets to his birthday bash in Texas this year which was a scaled down version from previous years. It got canceled due to covid which is a damn shame. Was the last chance I would've been able to see him.

I've drank beverages and bullshitted with him many times down in Belize. Always seemed like a good dude. He was a hell raiser back in the day, but had really mellowed out, at least from what I saw. He also has a house in Belize.

RIP

I didn't, I generally go down a week after it ends. His place is on the south end of the island, pretty nice digs and can be rented. I ran into him a lot at the Palapa Bar, the Grand Caribe and on the street. He was really good friends of a friend of mine that lives down there full time.

I think of him as a more country version of Jimmy Buffet. In fact they were great friends.

Its not fair to say he was like anyone at all, and as an artist for 50 years his genre was ever evolving, working with the likes of Willie Nelson among many others. But for a person who's unfamiliar with his work that would be his starting point.

I am not interested in the least in becoming more familiar with pickup truck music. I'm sure he was great but comparing him to Buffett does him no favors as far as I'm concerned.
