Hockey better than football? Have never seen that in a game thread. A better analogy would be a bunch if people talking about how much better football was before all the rules changes that have bitched up the game.

Music has gone downhill. I don't think that us even up for debate.

That being said, it's not like I've not listened to Feist's 1-2-3-4 on look all day at work for the last two work days. I like new music, I just think a lot of the crap around it is just funny..... But that's not new either, it's just grown more stupid with each year.

The problem I have with the Grammys is that at first they were reserved for musicians.

I used to belong to the NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) and attended SXSW but quit. It's all politics now and preprogrammed bullshit.

There is a huge difference between "musicians" and "performers"

Timberlake, Beyonce, Spears, Rhiannon, etc. = performers

Beatles, Stones, Byrds, Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, etc. = musicians

What you see on the Grammys for the most part is the shit they are selling.

Some of it is better than others... honestly I think the idea that it is all shit is overblown because people love shitting on things as soon as they are popular. Which is fine...whatever. I find great music in every little corner of this life I can.

It just funny to watch people sit on their asses with their worn out 80s hair bands talking shit on today's music like they have any inkling of an idea how much interesting and diverse music is out there today.

The difference is that the good music used to be popular. You always had the music that was trumped up by image and gimmicks, but for the most part, if your music was good it was popular and on the radio. Today's music is all about gimmicks and marketing. The best musicians don't necessarily ever become popular because they don't have the right look, right publicist, or a good gimmick.

It all started with MTV.

Remember when MTV played MUSIC?

Now they play bullshit because it makes more money than music.

Same scenario as what you are witnessing tonight.

Big deal that I think the Black Keys suck. I don't like any modern rock at all. I think it all blows. But the beauty about music is it doesn't really ****ing matter what any of us think. We all have different tastes in music.

The market is much more saturated with music...the digital age just changes everything...are there huge marketing machines propping things up? Of course.

But the musical landscape is totally different...genres are broken down it is easier to make music people can go to the far corners of wherever to find exactly what they like.

If you are annoyed because not all the good music is popular...well who gives a ****?

There is good music everywhere why do you need someone else to validate it?

The shifting music landscape does not mean there is not good music. It is actually the opposite.

It is great...listens to the song for a bit. Identifies it. Catalogs it.

I don't think you even have to look as hard as you used to... say even 10 years ago. It just seems like there are more popular acts like the Mumfords/Black Keys/Lumineers, etc. who get radio airplay, popularity, etc.

That's really just the tip of the iceberg. If you really wanted to go back in time there's Michael Kiwanuka, Fitz & the Tantrums, etc... acts that truly sound like they came from decades ago. And they've still achieved some sliver of popularity.

How often do you hear the same tired music on a classic rock radio station?

I love Lynyrd Skynyrd but there is so much out there that never makes it on the air. How bout some Black Oak Arkansas or more CCR.

Back when I was in TV and radio we picked our own music and played what we wanted. If we had to take a shit we played Ina Goda Davida for 17 minutes.

Now the Program Directors pick the music and it's the same for their whole network of stations. You will hear the same classic rock music in Kansas City that you will hear in Houston if it's the same broadcast group with little to no variation.

They push what they want you to buy.

She and Clarkson were made famous by American Idol which I have never watched.

Clarkson meh.

Carrie has talent and I'm sure she was playing out before the Idol gig.

But the Idol gig is what got her a record deal.

Who said anything about needing someone to validate anything? My favorite band, The Counting Crows, is probably not on many people's top 5 list. I just hate seeing bad musicians propped up by the industry because they sell.

Some of us have busy lives and can't spend countless hours looking for good/new music. The only reason I'm even watching this is my Wife took our son out if town for a visit with the Granparents.
