Jeff Hawkins officially has been reinstated to Kansas University's men's basketball team.

Hawkins, a 5-foot-11 junior out of Kansas City Sumner High, was suspended by coach Bill Self on Aug. 23 for unspecified "behavior issues."

"Jeff Hawkins has rejoined our team and has been going through boot camp and will be going through all things that are required of everybody else," Self said Wednesday. "Hopefully, this past month has given him an opportunity to really study his role in what is expected of everyone in the men's basketball program.

"We think Jeff has taken a big step in becoming more responsible. We think Jeff is a very good person and has great potential to help our club. We also feel like all people that his priorities must be in order. We feel Jeff has done that."

Self, who did not disclose the reason for the suspension, said Hawkins would take part in all team activities.

Damn. I wanted him to transfer to Washburn.

That would have been smart. Travel just a few miles but go from the limelight to basketball obscurity.

THere were rumors of that in the offseason. Wouldn't be smart for him, but he would have started @WU and got alot more playing time.

Close to home, a NC contender in DII, a legendary coach. Thats about it though..its still DII, like you said, obscure even if you are a year in year out contender.

Yep, there's lots of D1 schools that would take him.

Do you have to sit out a year of eligibility if you transfer to a DII from a DI? I dunno?

Who will get more playing time? Russel Robinson or Jeff Hawkins?

Robinson without a doubt. Hawkins is one of Roy's "projects." He supposedly has this great shot from beyond the arc, but save a handful of games I've never seen it. He's all promise no product, like Bryant Nash, like Moulaye Niang, like Eric Chenowith, like so many other of Roy's off year recruits. Robinson on the other hand has shown this great shot in the Canada trip and looks to back up at the point and 2 spots.

I was hoping Hawkins would transfer, we need to get Robinson as much time as possible because next year he will be the back court leader with Langford, Miles, and Lee leaving and a freshman point guard coming in.

Robinson in a landslide.

Saulbadguy 09-30-2004 08:47 PM

Thats what I was thinking. They need to groom a replacement for Aaron Miles.

royr17 09-30-2004 08:52 PM

Russel Robinson will most definately get more playing time than Jeff Hawkins.
