ESPN: Jordan - Raiders to finalize $27.5 million Contract

Already basking in the glow of their trade for Randy Moss, the Oakland Raiders later on Wednesday delivered on their promise to bolster their backfield.

LaMont Jordan, the top free-agent available at running back, agreed in principle Wednesday in a five-year deal worth $27.5 million.

Contract terms will be finalized Thursday.

"We have a deal in principle that he should sign tomorrow morning -- 99.9 percent sure he will be a Raider," Jordan's agent, Alvin Keels, told The Associated Press in an e-mail Wednesday night.

The deal is considered a blockbuster. Jordan will receive about $15.7 million in guarantees over the first three years of the contract, including a $7 million signing bonus. He had an offer of more than $3 million a year to stay with the Jets.

Jordan, 24, backed up Curtis Martin for four seasons in New York but has yearned to be a full-time player. Jordan rushed for 479 yards on 93 carries last season and owns a career average of 4.9 yards per carry. At 5-foot-10 and 230 pounds, he is the big, physical back the Raiders had sought.

The addition of Jordan coincided with the Raiders' release of veteran running back Tyrone Wheatley. Defensive tackle John Parrella also was released.

How the hell can the Raiders afford this, while we are hamstrung by cap issues?

Miles 03-02-2005 09:40 PM

Damn thats a lotta cash they have invested in their offense.

No shit. I was under the impression that moss's cap number pretty much left them tapped out. Did they get him to renegotiate or something?

Yeah it has all the makings for a beautiful disaster. Still that offense is going to put up some stats and i would feel a hell of a lot more comfortable if we solidify our D.

Randy moss, Jordan, Woodson, Porter, Sapp... I could swear these people alone put them over the cap limit...

According to John Clayton, Moss is going to convert his salary to a signing bonus tommorrow freeing up over 5 million more dollars in their cap. Moss and Jordan will only count 5 million total towards their cap next year.

They obviously have a better cap guy than we do. We sell out every game yet all we're doing so far is buying guys free dinners.

The Raiders adding Moss and Jordan is like us signing another RB. They're defense is ATROCIOUS.

As I was about to say, Norv Turner had great players at Washington too. He just doesnt seem to have the knack to control his players and I expect with all the new expectations, an implosion to occur at some point and time during the next season.

Unless we do something quick to fix this D they're gonna win two games against the chiefs next year!

Assuming those guys play up to potential, they'll be scary just like us too. I don't relish the thought of facing any high powered offense twice a year, regardless of their D.

This is all part of an evil scheme that Al "I'll Sue Your Ass Off" Davis has masterminded.

First he'll claim that the salary cap was written in black ink. Then he claim the cap was faxed to him from a silver copy machine and sue the league because as everyone knows, the Raiders own those colors and therefore that will make the salary cap null, void and illegal. Thus, they can spend all the money they want.
