Colts GM Bill Polian addresses free agency

From an article on the Colts website... figured it would generate interesting discussion.

Quote:

Polian said the Colts, as has been the case throughout his tenure, will not be a major player in high-profile names in free agency.

“I think it’s important for our fans to understand what the dynamic is that’s out there at this time of year, for the next month or so,” Polian said. “This is the feeding frenzy of free agency driven by the media as orchestrated by the agents. It has nothing to do with value. It has nothing to do with competence. It has everything to do with the feeding frenzy, which takes on a life of its own: the so-called second season.

“This is an area we choose not compete in. We don’t think there’s value in it. We think it’s fantasy football. It’s simply names and people reacting to names. I realize that I’m probably going to be the most unpopular guy on every website, but in the end, we’re firmly convinced the off-season standings mean absolutely nothing. It’s the regular-season standings that really count.

“You have to use your dollars judiciously and you have to make judicious and wise decisions.”

Polian said that doesn’t necessarily mean the Colts won’t sign any players in the coming weeks.

“That’s not to say if the right free agent is there we won’t go after him hammer and tongs,” he said. “We’re not going to go after them just so people can feel good about the fact that we’re out there now throwing money around.

“We are not playing now. No one’s playing now. The agents are reaping the value of making people think competition is going on now. It’s amazing. People forget just two months ago who won the Super Bowl and how they did it.”

Really well put...

That could have been summed up much more easily as "sorry, we spend all of our money on offense".

ROFL Hey! I was just doing it for the good of the Planet... I think we've found Rufus Dawes true identity. I think he makes some good points but to act like there isn't anybody out there worth going after right now isn't quite right either. There are people who make terrible decisions in FA but there are also some good deals out there, just gotta be smart about it. I think it's kinda funny that this comes from the GM who has the highest paid player in the league on his team... I don't care if he drafted him or not. He's given like 55 million in guaranteed money to two players over the last couple years.

I have to agree with him some what I mean look at the feeding frenzy we are having here in KC. The agents are stirring all these rumors and most all of them are false.

Since the inception of Free agency? None. He had a pretty bad run shortly before that though....:)

Is there any way the Colts defense doesn't absolutely suck next year?

Answer: no.

No they didn't. It was the Patriots, I'm pretty sure Colts fans know that and I'm sure they're thrilled you have no money to upgrade a defense only slighty better than ours.

Fantasy football? That's what the Colts are already playing with their lack of defense and ridiculous offense. If signing a couple of Pro Bowlers to shore up a terrible defense is fantasy and doesn't add value....then I'm all for a valueless fantasy team.
