The Sun-Sentinel reports the Miami Dolphins may keep CB Patrick Surtain if a trade cannot be worked out. It is believed the Dolphins may be interested in extending Surtain's contract, but both sides – the team and his agent, Gary Uberstine – have different opinions about his value. Uberstine said the way the free-agent market unfolds will likely determine Surtain's fate and that the Dolphins were interested in trading Surtain for draft picks.

They might be extending his contract so that he can be traded.

Or the Dolphins could just be saying they'll keep him to generate trade interest. Teams may be willing to wait them out to see if they'll just cut him for cap reasons.

Surtain might end up staying

Dolphins fans might not have to discard their No. 23 jerseys after all.

Agent Gary Uberstine acknowledged Wednesday that Patrick Surtain may be returning if a trade cannot be worked out.
The Dolphins had allowed Surtain to seek a trade last month after the two sides weren't close to ironing out a contract extension that would provide salary-cap relief while also giving the three-time Pro Bowl cornerback the pay increase he is seeking.

"I think that if they don't find something they feel is good value for the team that they're content to let Pat play his last year out," Uberstine said on WAXY (790-AM).

Uberstine said the way the free-agent market unfolds will largely determine Surtain's fate.

For example, Kansas City had expressed interest but is now courting free agent cornerbacks like Samari Rolle to avoid having to provide draft-pick compensation to the Dolphins.

The Kansas City Star also reported the Chiefs were unhappy with Surtain's financial requests.

The fate of other free-agent cornerbacks like Fred Smoot (Washington), Ken Lucas (Seattle) and Ty Law (ex-New England) will influence the market for Surtain as well.

Surtain, who has a year left on his contract, is to earn $6.17 million in salary with a salary-cap number of $8.38 million.

The Dolphins are believed interested in extending Surtain's contract but have a different opinion of his value at this stage in his eight-year career.

Uberstine said Kansas City is a potential suitor but Indianapolis isn't, which should end speculation about a trade of Surtain for Colts tailback Edgerrin James.

Uberstine said the Dolphins were interested in trading Surtain for draft picks.

"He's one of the few players on the team where [a trade] makes sense," Uberstine said.

"They could get good value opposed to renting him for a year."

If they CAN'T get what they want for him; they lose NOTHING, and gain spreading his signing bonus another year if they wait until June 1st to release him.

He is prtetty good but, he is not worth what he thinks he is or what Miami thinks he is.

I certainly would not want to give up a 2nd round choice for him.

Rolle and Smoot are the best available. We can concentrate our efforts there. If Surtain falls through the cracks.......oh well.

On the open market I would choose Surtain over Rolle or Smoot. However, I would take Rolle over Surtain if he cost a 2nd rounder.

Surtain is head and shoulders better than Smoot or Rolle. He's one of the top 2 or 3 CB's in the game...

Bingo

I think its stupid to make a trade till after FA slows down, if we are able to sign Rolle we don't need Surtain, but if the Dolphins still want to dance on Draft day I would do it.

My thinking exactly. However, I might give up a later round pick this year and a conditional 2nd round pick next year, but it seems like Miami wants picks for this year's draft.

No. Contract extensions invariably involve signing bonuses. When you get traded, your entire SB accelerates to hit the current year cap. It would be salary cap suicide to extend someone then trade him.
