For those wanting a WR in the 1st round.....WHY?

Over the last 3 years, our offense has finished 1st, 1st, and 2nd in the league in scoring. During that timespan we have never had great or even above average wide receivers, yet we still have no trouble scoring. Over that same timespan, our defense has been one of the very worst in the league. Based on that, why do some people on here say we need a WR? What indications are there that our offense needs a WR this year? No matter what happens, our #1 one will be Priest/LJ and #2 will be Gonzo....I honestly believe a WR drafted in the 1st round would not be happy being in our offense. On the flipside, we have made some great defensive additions this offseason, but we still aren't going to be confused with the 85 Bears. So, what's the deal? For those lobbying for a WR, explain your position, because I don't get it.

Why?

hummmmmmmm....

Well,
J. Morton (drops!)
Kennison (decent 2nd option, but lets get serious!)
Parker (9 catches)
Bo (bad knee - hasn't played in a year)
Hall (no no no no - just let him return the ball already)
Horn (cough)

All that mentioned above, and you can see what happens to one side of a team when you neglect it for too long.

Because the only LB worthy of a 1st won't fall to us in all likelihood.

and yet we still finish 2nd in the league in scoring.....

So we draft a CB, or DE, or DT, or Thomas Davis.....

A WR is not a priority on a team that finished 1st on offense and last on defense.

On the other side of the coin, how many of the losses came at a touchdown or less? 6? How many of them would a couple of 3rd down conversions by a receiver have changed?

I agree with this thread. I would like to see Parker given a chance to (hopefully) shine. Plus we are getting Kris Wilson back who will help our receiving game, not to mention Bo. Who knows who will be available after June 1. Some believe Isaac Bruce will be. Now that would be a great fit for us. I really think addressing the long term WR question should be next year's task.

The argument is simply that you can't rest on your laurels, and must continue to try to improve if you want to remain as successful as the Chiefs have been on offense. Our WRs are a year older, the OLine is a year older, Green may not be afforded the time he's had in the past to find open WRs who take longer getting to their spot, etc.

Having said that, I'm not suggesting we should take a WR. But I do understand that line of thought after adding Surtain, Bell, Knight and Hall. I'd still prefer we take the best defender on the board.

I agree. Vermeil and Saunders have gone on record saying our offense is hard for a rookie to learn, so why waste a high pick on one. Isaac Bruce would be a PERFECT fit with our team, IMO. I would love it if we picked him up after June 1.

Because within the next 2 years we will probably have to draft 2 WR's, 2 OL, a QBOTF, and maybe a RB, depending if LJ wants to stay in K.C. We can't let all of that catch up to us at once like we did with the D. Oh yeah, and a Full Back.

Bob Dole 04-22-2005 05:16 PM

Why?

Because that's the only shot we'll have at Matt Jones (EP, Arkansas), and everybody wants Matt Jones!

I think the pick should go defense, if Derrick Johnson or Carlos Rodgers are still on the board. But if Mike Williams or Troy Williamson pop up at 15, and the prime defensive players are gone. Williams is a true possession reciever who would make the Chiefs unstoppable in goal line situations. Williamson has so much speed, defensive safties could never cheat against the run. Both players change defensive gameplans.

The consensus on here is that this year is our last realistic shot at a Super Bowl for at least a few years. So why should we be worried about depth on offense right now? I want to win a Super Bowl, not worry about being competetive two or three years from now.
