John Clayton's Weblog: Chiefs Begin Search for Vermeil's Replacement

Didn't see this posted. I thought it was pretty Interesting...

Chiefs not wasting time

The Chiefs appear to be the most active during the first wave of Black Monday coaching interview calls. They made contact with Chargers offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, and Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel. They will have to wait until next week to talk to Williams because the Redskins are playing on Saturday. Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders is going to get an interview and is expected to finish in the final three. There is still the possibility team president Carl Peterson might go after Herman Edwards -- the Chiefs reportedly plan to contact the Jets for permission to speak with Edwards -- but, because of tampering rules, Edwards might have to work out a trade compensation arrangement with the Jets if he were to accept a Kansas City offer.

Williams and Cameron were the two guys Gretz thought were at the top of the list, too.

Who knows what to make of the Herm Edwards thing. It could be Herm spinning to get a raise and/or extension. He is one of the lowest paid coaches I think.

For some reason I see Fassel ending up in Oakland.

Someone else raised the possibility of Martz to Oakland, and that seems more like a Davis move to me.

Jeebus.... Moss/Porter/Gabirel/Curry... it's enough to make Martz' heart stop. :)

I really don't understand the Cam Cameron thing. I like the guy, got nothing against him, he's from my hometown area and all, but I do not understand why we'd hire him over Al Saunders.

*Looks at Antonio Gates' numbers, compares them to Gonzo's*

Yeah...seems to indicate that there is truth to the rumors that there is a conflict between Carl and Al.

I'd sure hope we don't hire a coach simply because of that. Gonzo faces more double and triple teams and bumps than anybody in the league, and when we get down in the red zone everybody is on top of him.

I mean really, the difference in the stats is that Gonzo had to block more early in the year due to our protection problems... and Gates got to face our defense twice a year. He ran wild on us the first time we met.

Agreed; I'd like to see Saunders as HC just to keep the offense intact and continue to build the "D".

It is of course only rumor, but it appears Carl and Al don't get along. Cam brings all the same offesive tendencies without that rumored problem with Carl.

Not to mention he is young and coming, which is considered a positive.

The question is now, and I assume Carl will ask, is Cameron a Republican?

Well, I'm sure it's not the only reason but, I believe it's one of them. I know Tony gets manhandled but, Gates gets a lot of attention as well. The dropoff in red zone production this year has to worry Carl, and I'm sure he's sick of watching Al run TE screens for Tony.

I also think one of the reasons Carl isn't sold on Al is the situation with LJ. Al's never been a big fan of LJ, and prefers the scatback type runner. I think Carl would like to know he has a coach who's committed to running his thoroughbred.
