Resign/Re-sign

This has been annoying me lately.

There's a rather significant difference between the two.

Resign means that the person has left their position, while re-sign means that they are staying longer.

For example, just about every thread is about re-signing (i.e. We Should not Resign Tony Gonzales), but people tend to always use "resign". So when I saw the thread a while back saying "Quin Snyder resigns at Mizzou", I assumed that it meant he had signed a new contract (which was confusing to begin with), and then Missouri fans were celebrating, which was even more confusing, and prompted me to actually read the thread starter, which was totally inconvenient.

That hyphen means a lot. So get it right! :cuss:

You should resign yourself to the fact that no matter what you do, people are going to say resign when they mean re-sign.

I hear ya, brotha, and I completely agree. It annoys the heck out of me, too. I've just resigned myself to the fact that some people are just plain dumb. :D

I agree with you because I brought this very same thing up several months ago. However, the problem is that the media doesn't make that distinction and that is why it is annoying. Two words, two nearly opposite meanings, and yet those who are paid to parse words ignore the differences on a massive scale.

I even made this joke in my post several months ago.

I must find a way to blame this on the n00bs.

So, what you're saying is that I'm inadvertently stealing bad jokes? :banghead:
