Okay....

What are your thoughts on the 2006 Draft?

Who should we draft in the first round? Or the later rounds?

Which positions do you think we should target?

Mr. Kotter 04-25-2006 01:49 PM

The 2006 NFL Draft is here--finally. Next weekend, the Chiefs will launch the Herman Edwards era with, perhaps, the most important draft they have faced in several years. Every draft is important, but with an aging squad the Chief’s choices next weekend could be the difference between a long rebuilding process and a quick reloading and turn-around.

The Chiefs needs appear to be pretty clear: defensive line, defensive backfield, and wide receiver are the priorities, while depth on the offensive line and Quarterback-of-the-future (QBOTF) should also bear careful consideration. As they send several veterans to their retirements in the next year or two, there are replacements to be groomed in addition to the obvious upgrades they need at several positions.

The future direction of this franchise may very well be determined by the draft choices the Chiefs make next weekend. Edwards has a reputation for being a good judge of talent and had a couple of impressive drafts while head coach of the Jets. Ideally, the Chiefs would like to draft three solid defensive players on the first day. However, the lack of depth in this draft may mean they only get two players who can make contributions early in their careers. The Edwards Era in Chief history would get a major lift with a good draft. Here is hoping it’s a good one!

My two cents if I were in the war room, as if Herm or any of you really care…

:)

My 2006 Mock Draft in brief:
1. (TRADE DOWN to later in Round One) Tamba Hali, DE Penn State
1.a. ALTERNATE PLAN: (Based on Availability: Antonio Cromartie or Ty Hill, if you insist on a CB)
2. Darnell Bing, S USC
3. Dusty Dvorcek, DT Oklahoma
3b. TRADE-DOWN compensation: Jason Avant, WR Michigan
5. Rashad Butler, OT Miami-FL
6. Rashaan Powers-Neal FB Notre Dame
6b. Best Available OG
7. Brad Smith, QB Missouri

:hmmm:

I offered more detailed breakdown, here....

How exactly dowe have two third rounders in your mock? Are you saying we are trading down in the second, and picking up Darnell Bing?

I'm saying, we trade down in the first for Hali....to pick up the extra third rounder, which we spend on Avant.

In the first round they get (and usually take) 15 minutes on the clock. Since the Chiefs are drafting 20th, about what time do you guys think the Chiefs will be on the clock in the 1st round?

If we stay w/ 20, I'd guess 3:30. If we trade back, I'm guessing we go 6-10 back, so maybe 5:30?

I would guess about 285 minutes after the draft starts.

He's one of the few that the offseason swayed my opinion of. He couldn't catch anything at the Senior Bowl and I think there are going to be plenty of guys left that are a better value. I'm more of a fan of Martin Nance in a later round if the Chiefs want that possession type reciever.

kc-nd 04-25-2006 03:54 PM

Did we make our first pick yet?

I can wait to hear everyone say "who they heck is he?" and "why do we need another tight end?" and "Carl Pedderson should have been let go years ago" and stuff like that.

nychief 04-25-2006 04:25 PM

rnd 1: Chad Johnson
rnd 2: Rod Wright
rnd 3: some freaking Oklahoma A&M Poli-Tech safety

I don't want Lawson, he is way too undersized. IMO Lawson is too small to be anything other than a Robert Mathis type situational pass rusher in the 4-3.

I think the Senior Bowl was just a bad day. Hagen may not get day one consideration from the Chiefs--but he'll likely be gone; but if he's still there in the fifth or sixth, I'd grab him. Nance would be a decent mid-to-late round selection as well.
