Why did San Diego take a kicker?

I was not watching when this pick happened.

Round 6: 19 (188) Kurt Smith K Virginia

What's up with that? Did they discuss this on ESPN? We ended up taking Webb from their own backyard two picks later. I don't understand why they'd do this, especially since they took a kicker in the 2nd round not but two years ago.

Good question. Seemed like a very odd pick.

Marty can never have enough kickers.

Reading over at the Chargers forum... I guess the guy has a massive leg. He'll just be a kickoff specialist... he had 66 kickoffs for Virginia, 54 reached the endzone and he had 38 touchbacks. Impressive numbers, but it'll be interesting to see how he adjusts to having the K-balls. Not showing much faith in Kaeding's kickoff depth either... I don't know about that.

I also have to say reading over there, it's funny because so many of their fans take offense to things ESPN said about their picks and how ESPN is against them.... despite the fact that many of those ESPN guys and every other major media outlet repeatedly referred to the Chargers as the greatest non-playoff team EVERRRR last year. And people think we're bad about that.

Using a draft pick on a kickoff specialist?

Is that common?

Actually while we're on kickers. One of our papers had a write up on an aussie who looked confident in having a deal (drafted or otherwise). That would take the current crop of aussie punters to three (Graham, McBriar and this guy)

http://calbears.cstv.com/sports/m-fo...e_david00.html

doesn't seem to have been drafted, hopefully he'll pick iup a gig somewhere.

Tynes had a fine year last year. His only meaningful miss was because Ed Perry sucks balls...

Its funny now bc the Chargers have both of the guys I wanted that year - Rashaun Woods and Nate Kaeding.

Conor Hughes was the kicker at Virginia, so this was probably just a kickoff specialist pick.

Agreed; Tynes had a much better season last year. How that translates into this season remains to be seen, but I'm not expecting a decline in his performance.
