NFLScoop has learned that the salary cap is expected to rise into the area of $66.5 million next season.
TOP 5 TEAMS IN VIOLATION OF THE 2001 SALARY CAP 1. Jacksonville, $102.5 million for 42 players. 2. Kansas City: $98 million for 46 players. 3. Dallas: $83 million for 39 players. 4. Buffalo: $80 million for 39 players. 5. Minnesota: $80 million for 37 players. |
Damn, it is hard to get that far over the cap and not have a big time RB on your roster.

20 million of that is a bonus that Elvis has in his contract. Obviously it will never be paid. We're not in such bad shape.
|
I really would like to see a detailed accounting of this number. The way I understand it is that we are currently in compliance with the salary cap for this year. IF all of the contracts were paid out as they are written currently, we would be over the cap next year. That cannot happen, so those contracts will need to be eliminated or changed.
I know EG's 'bonus' of 10M is probably the biggest chunk of this 'overage'. I have faith that like last years 'bonus' he wont see this one either. |
IMO this is all much ado about nothing. CP had to do plenty of "caprobatics" to get this year's team under the cap, and he did it with minimal furore. As has already been pointed out, Grbac's inflated bonus and salary accounts for a large portion of the excess. Restructuring of his and other veteran's contracts, and release of certain other players will bring us back in line in time to sign next year's draft picks. This is one thing that CP does better than most GMs - negotiating and renegotiating (OK, that's 2 things!). We'll likely find we'll be way over the 2002 cap when that offseason comes around and so on and so forth. So we probably might as well get used to it.

Hmmmm... sounds like CP may need to give a call into Bowlen to get some pointers. Just make sure you fund the accounts appropriately.

NFL Scoop? Sounds like a National Enquirer offshoot.

Mile High,
As long as he doesn't call Carmen Policy we should be fine http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/wink.gif |
Alan- You should check them out. http://www.nflscoop.com Unlike NFL Talk, they post news, news and more news. They have something like 50 new news stories this morning.<BR>

Yeah, the great majority of that is with Elvis, McGlockton, and Dan Williams. Not to mention Carlton Gray...
|
Da Wolf,
With all the offseason restructuring that has gone on, and the Chiefs policy of not releasing details of salaries, are you sure that McGlockton, Williams and Gray still count that much against the cap? Or do the negotiations just lessen the hit for that season? Just wondering...... |
I read that Chester and Williams and Gray all restructured this year, which basically means they pushed some money back to next year. We restructured some contracts because we were supposed to be like $20 million over this year. That was eased some with the reworking and/or release of guys like Vanover, Anders, Rison, O'Neal, etc...
