Yeah, and the fact that Topeka Public Schools NEVER cancels.

The world could explode and body parts could line the streets, and Topeka 501 would still be open.

Their reasoning is "we have too many kids who rely on us for shelter/meals."

I guess I can sort of understand that, but come on. It's very dangerous on the side streets.

How many kids even show up.......from what I remember and know from my brother and sister even if schools do open on days like this about 80% of kids don't show up.

Just got back from dropping kids off at school. Roads aren't bad at all. Having said that, Topeka public schools (USD501) rarely close. It doesn't matter how dangerous the roads become 501 will always be open.

They do close sometimes. But yeah, it is a pretty rare occasion.

Rarely happens. I know I have kept the kids home because the district chose not to close schools and every community around Topeka closed. I don't want my kids safety determined by some out of touch with reality, overpaid administrator.

I know. My son is in 8th grade and has probably missed school due to closings about 2-3 times in his life. I went through the Topeka school system in the 70s and 80s and I can only remember once or twice missing school due to weather closings.

Saulbadguy 11-30-2006 09:09 AM

They've closed 501 schools once every year for the last few years. I'd know..cause I worked there. :) We still had to come in because my ****ing prick of a boss declared us all "essential employees".

KCFalcon59 - Tony Sawyer is the best Superintendent 501 has had in a long time. Until you've met him, I wouldn't call him out of touch with reality. He is a very knowledgable man, and very down to earth. The reasons Topekans don't like him his because he uses big words.

Oh, FWIW, their are a couple of "big" reasons 501 rarely closes. The first is because 501 does offer breakfast for parents who are too lazy to feed their kids in the morning, or are just too poor.

Second - alot of kids go to the Quinton Heights hill to sled when school is closed. The hill is right next to the 501 administration office, and the Superintendent has a view from his office of this hill. What do you think he thinks when he sees all the kids that could be in school, sledding?
