Hawks, Kerney agree to terms

ESPN.com's John Clayton has the news: The Seahawks have agreed to terms with Falcons DE Patrick Kerney on a six-year contract. More to come. John is reporting that this is a $39.5 million deal with about $19.5 million in guarantees. The Seahawks were looking for d-line help not only for what a new player might bring on his own. The team also needed to find relief for Bryce Fisher and Grant Wistrom, who are more effective when they don't have to play every down. Fisher played a very high percentage of snaps last season. Darryl Tapp provided some relief for Wistrom. Kerney gives them another starting-caliber player up front. The question, of course, is whether he can bounce back from injury and continue to produce beyond age 30.

Good news for the Seahawks. I am just glad you screwed the Donkeys over

Chiefs Pantalones 03-05-2007 10:17 PM

I'd rather you guys have him than the Donkeys.

Good job, Seahawks!

Always thought he was overhyped.

According to Clayton he made his decision while flying back to Atlanta, I'm thinking Paul Allens 757 he was flying on helped him make his decision..

After two days of negotiations, the Seattle Seahawks reached an agreement with Atlanta Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney, considered the best remaining free agent on the market.

Kerney, 29, got a six-year, $39.5 million contract that included $19.5 million in guarantees. He was involved in a two-way negotiating battle with the Seahawks and Denver Broncos. The decision was going to be a tough one, but it required a deadline. Kerney and his agents used the length of a flight to make his decision.

Kerney and his agents, Tony Agnone and Rich Rosa, got on a Paul Allen private plane that was taking them to Seattle. They spent the time in the plane deciding the best options. When he left Seattle, Kerney informed the Broncos and Seahawks he would have an answer by the time the plane touched down in Atlanta.

The winner was Seattle, but now another battle brews. The Seahawks and Broncos enter into negotiations Tuesday with New England Patriots tight end Daniel Graham.

Kerney is expected to give the Seahawks a much-needed pass rush. The 6-5, 273-pound defensive end has had three double-digit sack seasons and a trip to the Pro Bowl in 2004. Though hurt by injuries last season, Kerney is still expected to play at a Pro Bowl level.

It probably helped that Kerney got to know Seahawks general manager Tim Ruskell when Ruskell worked in Atlanta. Also, Seattle assistant head coach Jim Mora was Kerney's head coach for three seasons in Atlanta.

I'm glad he put the sandy skin stump to the donks.

Joe, Seattle would have been better off in the draft looking for a DE. They could have waited on one of the bookends from Nebraska. Moore or Carriker.

They already blew their big wad on Henry.

I was wanting to hear that Denver signed him... but that's a lot of money for a guy his age, coming back from injury. I was hesitant about this signing...

Yeah, I think you guys will be better off finding someone cheaper or someone through the draft. Do you think there's any chance you guys will be going after Randy McMichael?

Weird. So, any player that chooses some place other than Denver is screwing Denver? Damn... you guys are lucky to have an owner that doesn't chase FAs. :p
