Mike Tanier: "NFL Draft Analysis" Chiefs mentions

WORST PICKS [3rd round]

Tank Tyler, defensive tackle, Chiefs:
The Chiefs have an awful track record with defensive tackles. They've spent high picks on recent years on Ryan Sims, Eddie Freeman, and Junior Savaii, none of whom really produced. Part of the problem is that Carl Peterson and his coaches are too enamored with Combine heroes. Savaii was a bench press hero, and so is Tyler, who benched 225 pounds 42 times at the Combine. Tyler dogged a bit at NC State, but Herm Edwards believes he can reach him, just as Dick Vermeil always believed he could motivate any even the biggest slug. Tyler isn't a major reach in the third round, but he won't solve any problems in Kansas City.

BIGGEST SURPRISES [fifth round]

Justin Medlock, kicker, Chiefs:
Medlock was involved in a scary DUI incident in 2005: he hit a police call box, flipped his car, and injured a passenger. His leg and accuracy are pretty good, but wasn't Lawrence Tynes enough of a headache as a kicker?

SCHOOL IN THE SPOTLIGHT [seventh round]

Whitworth:
Chiefs tight end Michael Allan is the first player drafted from this small Presbyterian college in Washington since Eric Kelley in 1972. The Pirates compete in the Northwest Conference against schools like Puget Sound and Lewis and Clark. Allan led the Pirates with 1,100 receiving yards, but scouts should head back to Whitworth and take a look at their defensive backs: the Pirates picked off 28 passes last season, with Ryan Marshall and Jay Tully (both seniors in 2007) grabbing seven each. If Marshall or Tully is drafted next year, remember where you first read about them.

So taking a guy who most teams had at a 2nd round late in the third is a bad pick/reach.

by this logic,we should never draft a D-tackle again, because we've failed recently. Yeah, that's the ticket.

Sounds like this guy has a personal thing with the Chiefs.

I'd bet that most "experts" end up calling the Tyler pick a great value.

Where this guy gets off calling Tyler a slug is beyond me. Apparently he hasn't watched him play.

Just because we missed at DT in the DV era doesn't mean we'll miss in the Herm Edwards era.

I absolutely hate the ribbing KC has taken for what is actually a solid draft.

Hammock Parties 04-29-2007 07:28 PM

That's reeruned. Tyler DOMINATED on the field.

BTW, this jackass hack could have at least spelled Siavii's name right.

Frankly, with our badluck at DT, we should just go to a 2-4-5 base defense.

Guess we shouldn't have drafted Bowe either, since our record with WR's is ust as bad as with DT's......

Who is this guy, again? I've never heard of him?

Savaii was such a mistake.

Nuh uh, he dogged it! Mike Tainter said so.

BigMeatballDave 04-29-2007 07:35 PM

Someone explain to me how Tank is a bad pick in the 3rd?

Ultra Peanut 04-29-2007 07:39 PM

Because our history with DTs is bad, and uh... uh... I can't bother to check the spelling of someone's name!

unothadeal 04-29-2007 07:48 PM

He has Calvin Johnson as one of the worst picks in the first round. He's also an ass.

unothadeal 04-29-2007 07:48 PM

Oh, and he doesn't mention San Diego's reach of what's his face. I guess he'll be better than CJ?

KCinNY 04-29-2007 07:54 PM

Jeezus...the guy was in several late 1st/early 2nd mocks leading right up to draft weekend, but now he qualifies as a "worst pick" in the late 3rd?

reeruned.

With the second overall pick, Matt Millen didn't do something stupid. He did something Matt Millen. Johnson is a great prospect. With him and Roy Williams at wideout, the Lions will field the best possible Jon Kitna-helmed offense. Exactly how far do you think that will get them?
Jesus Christ, what a reerun.

"Sure, he's a receiving demigod, but what about all of the OTHER holes on the team?"
