Boxing...What a joke

What has happened to this sport? Has money and Don King ruined it?

There are some great boxers out there...SS mosley is the man, but on a whole, it's like a circus...Duran and Comacho? Please. and what about Macho jr? Gets cut for the first time, and HE stops the fight? Holyfield and Ruiz for the THIRD time? Tyson eating people. Lennox knocked out by a nobody, only to receive 10 mill in a rematch...? I'm also tired of the "parade "when a fighter comes out, half the time, I'm thinking Wayne Newton's boxing...Sheesh.

Trying to kill time till TC.

Bwana 07-21-2001 07:05 PM

Stevieray: I agree 100%. There is a sorry bunch out there right now hitting the ring for sure. Homeboy clowns like Don King make the sport what it has turned into today......a complete joke in a lot of cases. There was a time when I really enjoyed the sport, both on a first hand level and watching the sport.

Times have changed! There is no way in hell I would pay the bucks to watch one of the so called big fights on pay per view. If I wanted to see a circus, there are better ways to do it.

All I do is kickbox now, which I have been doing for many years. Not as popular, but very few clowns like King are in the sport.

I just finished watching Michael Grant get his clock cleaned by a total scrub 5 seconds into round one...no, I'm not kidding.

After that, Shane Mosely (sp?) knocked out some unknown in the 3rd.

Luckily, it wasn't on pay-per-view.

IMO boxing should be "ruled" by ONE league, and they should have a season and set schedules. You're not ready? You're injured? If you don't show for your scheduled fight, you just lost.

I want boxing to be a sport, not a political circus.

"I want boxing to be a sport, not a political circus."

Boxing has ALWAYS been a political circus. At first a black man, no way no how, would ever get an opportunity to get a belt. Then the mafia ran the sport. And now it's Don King that holds all the cards. If a fighter wants a belt, it's almost impossible without going through King first.

I've been watching boxing for as long as I can remember. I even enjoyed it as a kid. But, I definatly agree about the "circus" acts of today. It costs waaaaaaaaay too much to watch a decent fight. Then you have fools like Prince Hamed entering the ring on a flying carpet as if it's the WWF. And with the exception of De La Hoya, most of the top fighters won't fight a legitimate contender. And when they do, they only fight once or twice per year.

I still enjoy watching a good fight. And most of the best fights I've watched were on Tuesday Night Fights on the USA Network. These were the fighters that gave it 110% in the ring because this was their only opportunity to make a name for themselves.

Anybody remember Rocky Gannon or James Thunder? You knew when these guys fought, you would see an awsome fight.

California Injun 07-21-2001 11:46 PM

stevieray,

Are you just figuring this thing out?

If you want to watch some great boxing then check out ESPN Classics.

What's the problem?

No legitimate Heavyweight talent. Lewis was illigitimate as a champ. Everyone knows Tyson would have clobbered him, yet everyone Demands he not get that fight, and I agree that he doesn't deserve to box again. He should try the UFC.....

At least that isn't rigged yet, and it's "pure" fighting. Although wattered down of late....

Cannibal 07-22-2001 11:18 AM

Lewis [if properly motivated] would've killed Tyson in the ring.

Lewis was not motived for his last fight, he was out of shape and took for granted that he would win. It came back to bite him in the arse.

Lewis will destroy Rahman in the rematch.

Cannibal 07-22-2001 11:27 AM

BTW,

Tyson is the one who has never been "legitimate".

He has NEVER fought anyone of note, except for Holyfield and when he fought him he got his head kicked in.

Look at this pathetic list of "tomato cans" he "fought"

Tyson has been overrated his entire career.

All you fellow fans of 'the sweet science' should make an effort to watch the Tuesday and Friday night fights on ESPN2. You won't see marque name talent, but you will see up and comers who are trying to make their name. The quality of the fights can vary but you won't see idiots like Nassem or Camacho Jr. Tuesday night the main even was Micky Ward vs Warren Burton. It was a non stop action fight by two folks I've never heard of.

Showtime also has generally good matches and have a new series called 'Showbox' that features up and comers.

As for the marque fights I'd like to see: David Tua vs Mike Tyson and Roy Jones jr. vs Felix Trinidad.

redfan 07-22-2001 12:36 PM

The mistake ya'll are making

is thinking the big marquee fights are going to be good! When was the last time a big heavyweight fight actually lived up to the hype?!?! Ali/Frazier? Regardless, it's been a loooong time.
I'll agree w/ ck in that the Tues night fights are usually pretty good. Not many names, just fighters trying hard to impress. Same goes for the Friday night fights.
Boxing is still a great sport, you just have to stay away from the big promotions, because the fight becomes kinda secondary to all the pomp.
Don King is a choad.

Tyson overrated? Yes, probably, but it's not really his fault that the late eighties and early nineties were a wasteland for a champ looking for contenders. The same thing could be said for Larry Holmes, clearly the best fighter of his time, but he lacked somebody to play George Foreman/Joe Frazier to his Ali, or vice versa. When a palooka like Tex Cobb gets a title shot, you know there is a dearth of talent in the ranks.

As for Don King, yes he is a crook, but boxing has been crooked since the days of bare-knuckle fights.

California Injun 07-22-2001 11:09 PM

The best way to enjoy ANY fight is to put a few Franklin's on it.

I've never screamed louder with each punch landed than when I've spotted some odds with at least 5 C-notes on it.

ESPN Classics is going to be showing the Leonard/Hagler fight this week.

Hagler-Leonard-Hearns-Benitez-Duran was an incredible time for the Welterweight division and boxing overall.

PunkinDrublic 07-23-2001 06:10 AM

What planet do you live on? Boxing has always been surrounded by unsavory characters and corruption long before Don King became a promoter. Don King actually gave the fighters a chance to make millions.
