Barry Richardson Quotes

CLEMSON — When the fifth round shifted to the sixth Sunday afternoon, Barry Richardson got antsy.

Clemson’s big offensive tackle had been told by his agent that he could go anywhere from the second to fifth rounds in the NFL draft, and the fifth had just passed him by with no news.

“I knew I was going to get drafted, but I guess it got to the point in the sixth round where you’re promised the second to the fifth and here comes the sixth,” Richardson said. “You get nervous.”

Richardson’s worries didn’t last long. The Kansas City Chiefs snapped him up with the sixth round’s fourth pick — 170th overall — of the seven-round draft.

He joined defensive end Phillip Merling (a second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins) as Clemson’s only 2008 draftees. Guard Chris McDuffie, tackle Christian Capote and linebackers Nick Watkins and Tramaine Billie will be likely free-agent signees today.

“I started off the day and didn’t know where I was going,” Richardson said. “It’s good to know where I’m going to be in the next week or two (for rookie mini-camp). I’ve been working out the past two months and this is a big weight off my shoulders.”

Given that Richardson is a 6-foot-6, 320-pounder who started 45 games at left tackle for Clemson, that’s one large weight.

Richardson said he didn’t talk with the Chiefs much, knowing only that they were in the market for offensive linemen.

“I didn’t communicate with them as much as you would think,” he said. “I knew they were interested, knew they needed offensive linemen in the draft.

“But I had no idea they were going to really think about drafting me. I knew they had interest but was surprised to hear from them.”

The timing, he said, was excellent.

“The fourth pick of the sixth round was me,” he said. “That’s as close to the fifth round as possible.”

Richardson is confident about his chances in Kansas City. The Chiefs have an aging line and are in the market for young replacements like Branden Albert, Virginia’s tackle-guard combo who was their second first-round pick.

“I’ll have the opportunity to come in and start, compete for the starting job,” Richardson said. “They brought me in to play a key role, come in and help out with the running and passing games.

“I’ll give it all I’ve got and hopefully bring a championship to Kansas City.”

I can appreciate a man who is greatful to be picked. It kind of bothered me that Albert seemed upset that he dropped in the draft. He should be happy for the large payday he will be getting rather than being upset about what someone else thought might happen.

This guy has NFL starter talent. He's just gotta get his head in the game.

We also picked up his teammate Chris McDuffie as an UDFA

That's exactly how I feel.

Great pickup in UDFA. McDuffie could seriously be on this team for depth on Day One.

By the way -- the best thing about Richardson, if he can hold his own, is that he's the most durable lineman in this Draft.

After going through about 9 RTs in the last two years, we might finally have someone who can man the position down.

I'm glad we got this kid. I hope he makes a big contribution to the team.

The best thing about Barry Richardson is we can call him B-RICH.

SUP, B-RICH?

For a guy that graduated HS in 3 years and got his paper from Clemson in 3 years, I'm not worried about his intellect. I'm worried about his ambition. Hopefully, the desire to put money in the bank to prepare for life after football will be a strong motivator.

I'm a student at Clemson currently, and Barry could not of been a better pick for us at the 6th round. He has the tools to have been a first day pick, but motivation issues pushed him into the late rounds. I see B-Rich from time to time and he is soft spoken and humble. He has the potential to be a steal for us.

Also, Mcduffie is a solid pickup in fee agency. How he wasn't picked up in the draft is beyond me. His last year at Clemson was an All-American campaign, I think he was third team or honorable mention I can't remember. He's 6'4 320, and he has a mean streak in him. Strong and durable, and I think he might suprise many on the next level.

GO CHIEFS!!! GO TIGERS!!!!

McDuffie has some off the field issues that dropped him.

Either way Richardson's 1 flaw is something that Herm is suppose to be the best at, Richardson has always been a guy I thought would go later but would be a good player due to his vast experience and natural skill.....hopefully I'm right for the sake of the team.

I am up in Nebraska-land and haven't found the list of UDFA's for the Chiefs. Has anything been published yet???

yea he got caught with marijuana back in 04. He took responsibility for his actions. Plus he's had some injuries which kept him out of some games but nothing serious.

Direckshun 04-28-2008 03:02 PM

If he busts I'm blaming Mecca.
