Royals claim catcher Pena off waivers

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals on Friday claimed catcher Brayan Pena off waivers from the Atlanta Braves.
Pena was expected to join the club before Friday night's game against the Cleveland Indians. A move to clear space on the 25-man active roster will be made before the game.

A switch-hitter, Pena has been strictly a pinch-hitter for the Braves this season, going 4-for-14 (.286) with one double. He has not caught or played any position on the field this year.

Pena's played in parts of four seasons for the Braves with a .228 average, two homers and 12 RBIs. In 40 games as a catcher, he's handled 137 chances without an error. He appeared in one game at third base.

Pena, 26, is from Havana, Cuba. In the Minor Leagues, he batted .303 with 15 home runs and 222 RBIs in 572 games.

He defected from Cuba in 2000 while on a trip to Venezuela. He becomes the ninth Cuban-born player in Royals history, joining second baseman Cookie Rojas, infielder Jackie Hernandez, utility player Eli Marrero, pitchers Aurelio Monteagudo and Israel Sanchez, outfielders Jose Cardenal and Sandy Valdespino and catcher Nelson Santovenia. He is not related to Royals shortstop Tony Pena Jr.

Might not be a bad deal. You'd think that eventually we'd find a Pena that's worth a shit.

Hitting .286 with a double so far this year.

This may just mean more time for Olivo at DH/1B. If he's going to play every day, and Buck is the starting catcher, they probably feel they need another catcher on the roster.

That takes care of the losing streak.

And where is the outcry about the Bravesification of this proud franchise?!

If you're playing a catcher at DH...somethings gone terribly terribly wrong.

Make a deal, Baird. Call up the Cards, Duncan can be had fairly cheap right now.

As I recall from when he was a Brave, Pena is a decent hitter but not a very good catcher. Which is important if you happen to be a catcher.

It was lovely how the Royals didn't even attempt to keep Beltran.

Yea, if they knew they werent going to get fair value for him, they should have at least tried to show him the Money!

Damn I'm glad I quit following the Royals. This kind of shit reminds me of the old KC A's being a farm club for the Yankees and others.
