Four-star fullback commits to KU

Toben Opurum, a four-star fullback out of Plano (Texas) East High, became the Kansas University football team's 18th known commitment in the Class of 2009 Tuesday, according to Rivals.com.

Opurum, who rushed for 873 yards and eight touchdowns on 107 carries (an 8.2 yards-per-carry average) this season, also received offers from Florida, Texas Tech, Notre Dame and Nebraska. Following a visit last weekend to Lawrence, however, the 6-foot-2, 229-pound Opurum informed KU wide receivers coach David Beaty he had decided Kansas was the right fit and would be foregoing his remaining visits.

“The visit went great,” Opurum told the Web site. “The thing that stood out was how well I meshed with all of the players and coaches. I knew after the visit there was no need to take others. I saw what I needed and knew I could make decision off that.”

Rated the No. 3 fullback in the nation and the No. 45 player in the state of Texas by rivals, Opurum is the second four-star prospect to commit to Kansas, joining defensive back and fellow Texas native Prinz Kande.

T-minus 20 months until someone talks about him coming out early and the Chiefs nabbing him with their 2nd round pick.

Looks like that Orange Bowl win is opening the floodgates.

Well good for KU but this strikes me as strange.

If you're a top talent FB, why would you go to a team that runs the spread? You won't see the filed much from that position.

To me that's kind of like a top WR prospect going to a team that runs the option. ???

That is very good question and I wondered that as well. FYI, Brandon McAnderson was a FB until the 2007 Orange Bowl season. I think I read somewhere that that is what KU is planning to do with him. They are also experimenting with moving Angus Quigley (KU's #2 HB) to linebacker next year. That would open up a spot for this guy to come in and share the load with Jake Sharp next year. Unless, of course, Crawford actually starts to do something next year. Then they may put a RS on the guy next year.

He runs the spread offense in high school so he is already familiar with it. His numbers are more impressive when you realize his team passes way more then average.
