Randy Covitz: Super Candidates

Super candidates

Here's a thought.

As Scott Pioli contemplates the future of Herm Edwards and his 6-26 record of the past two seasons, he might want to consider there are four coaches who have won Super Bowls in the past 10 years on the open market.

They are: Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden, Brian Billick and Mike Shanahan.

That doesn't include Tony Dungy, who retired at age 53, or Dick Vermeil, who already had his day in Kansas City.

Go back two more years, and there's Mike Holmgren, who plans to sit out this year.

Pioli is not hurting for candidates.

Romanowski isnt on the Super list?

Deberg_1990 01-16-2009 09:55 PM

Why do we need any of those guys when we have Herm?

Cowher's said he's not coaching this year hasn't he? I'd say that takes him out of the equation.

Methinks Randy is recycling someone else's ideas:

To sum up the state of the NFL coaching business, consider this: Only two active head coaches have won Super Bowls. Two! New England’s Bill Belichick has three titles and New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin has one.

Aside from those two, no active head coach has won a Super Bowl.

And in a different sense, the numbers are even more startling. Since 2005, nine Super Bowl-winning coaches have either have been fired or retired.

The nine: Brian Billick, Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, Joe Gibbs, Jon Gruden, Mike Holmgren, Bill Parcells, Mike Shanahan and Dick Vermeil.

DV anyone?

we've been down that road...

Burt Reynolds drew up some fancy plays in the 1st and 2nd Longest Yard. Maybe he is on the secret list of coaches?

Yeah lets Recycle.... Instead of the trend of hiring fresh minds...

Bring in the retreads!

I wouldn't mind Billick or Shanahan. I like the sound of Spag as HC and McDerrmot as DC though.

With the exception of Cowher, DCS dubs that list "The best "floral design" for Charmin Shitter Tissue of 2009".

Retreads win Championships actually, Gruden his 2nd job. Bellichik his 2nd job. Shanahan his 2nd job. As with the coach of the Giants, for some reason i cant remember his name atm. Dungy 2nd coaching job. I think Bill Cowher is the only one recently and it took him what 14 years?

9 of the last 11 S.B. winning coaches were on their 2nd job.

Nuff said, thread over. (I'll refrain from calling you a reerun) ROFL
