Kansas City remade its front office, its coaching staff and now it gets to work on its roster. One of the first of those significant moves came Tuesday, when the Chiefs cut veteran CB Patrick Surtain.

The move removed Surtain’s $7 million base salary off Kansas City’s books and instantly freed up $6.184 million that the Chiefs will now be able to spend on free agents and draft picks. The 32-year-old Surtain is not expected to be the last Chiefs player released before Friday. Veteran LB Donnie Edwards could also be in jeopardy, as he is scheduled to make $5 million in base salary. If he is released, it would free up another $4.5 million in salary-cap savings.

It’s the time of the year when the size of the free-agent pool grows by the day. It happened Tuesday in Kansas City, and it will happen again Wednesday and Thursday in other cities.

I remember exactly where I was when I first got the news we traded for him. I was so excited because I thought he was one of the final pieces to the puzzle. Boy was I wrong.

He was pretty awful, and I'm glad he's gone.

Another aging veteran that CP handed over a draft pick for, along with the richest contract in franchise history at the time.

The defining moment for Surtain was when he was basically running in quick sand after that INT during the Chargers game.

Surtain played pretty well for the majority of his time here. He wasnt "awful" until last season.

He will not be missed.

Another terrible Carl failure.

Surtain made an ABSURD amount of money as a Chief.

He didn't come close to living up to his contract.

Maybe if the bastard hadn't dropped an interception in Dallas the 2005 Chiefs would have won the Super Bowl.

Instead he played like a corner without a $14 million dollar signing bonus.

Man. I can't say I'm sorry to see him go.

Surtain didn't just lose a step, he misplaced the whole damn ladder.

How awesome is that? If we release Donnie Edwards after this then we'll have added almost $11 million to our salary cap.

BigChiefFan 02-24-2009 05:11 PM

Decent, but we we're a day late and a dollar short. Surtain could have learned a thing or two from Hasty about giving your all. Surtain got soft and it's time for someone hungry to make a name for themselves in his place.

You obviously have a different view of "pretty well" than I do.

I didnt say he lived up to his contract, I said he played pretty well the majority of the time he was here. I guess anyone would have looked good to me after getting used to Eric Warfield, William Burntee, and Dexter Mccleon...

Crush 02-24-2009 05:13 PM

Good riddance.

Yep. I also remember him getting injured week 1 vs the jets and thinking, "oh nooes, there goes our season"
