The symbol isn't everything, Superman is still Superman without the "S" on his chest
 

but the symbol does mean something.

To the wearer it means recognition of his dedication and hard work. It is acceptance into a group and a lifestyle where one stands up for those who can't stand up for themselves.

To thousands of kids world wide who have been hurt in unspeakable ways... it means safety, love, support, and family.
