Gretz:Practice Report 9/17 UPDATE

Practice Report 9/17 UPDATE
September 17, 2009 - Bob Gretz |

From the Truman Sports Complex

It was more of the same Thursday morning for QB Matt Cassel during the team’s practice session.

In the portion of practice that the media is allowed to view, Cassel went through all the position drills, including those that required movement. He seemed to have the same quickness and manuvered as he did during Wednesday’s drills. Cassel’s throws looked strong and accurate and he did not seem to have problem putting weight on that injured left knee.

“I’m leaps and bounds ahead of where I was last week,” Cassel said after practice. “I feel like I’ve made a lot of progress. My (practice) work load definitely went up this week. Coach has said we are going to take it day-by-day.”

That day may be Friday.

“Our evaluation will include tomorrow,” Haley said. “He’s made progress.” When asked if he would like to have a decision on Friday, Haley said he would.

“There are medical issues involved when an injury occurs and there are certain times that things take. But like I said, the player is doing everything under his power to be ready and that’s usually a good thing.”

Cassel would welcome news as early as possible. ‘Sooner rather than later,” Cassel said.

RB Larry Johnson said Cassel has looked very good this week.

“He looked good, he bounced around and had the energy and the excitement,” said Johnson. “He seems to be adjusting to the knee brace thing and being able to move around. Each day he’s gotten better.”

CB Brandon Flowers was also practicing Thursday, working through position drills with the defensive backs. Flowers is the only other player the team is listing as being less than a full participant in practice. Haley said Flowers situation “was hand-in-hand” with Cassel. He did more in practice this week, but a decision on his participation Sunday has not been determined.

If Cassel plays, he’ll see a familiar face across the line of scrimmage in DL Richard Seymour. Over the last four years they’ve been teammates on the Patriots. Sunday, they will be on opposites sides.

“He’s a guy who plays hard and everbody looked up to him in the locker room,” said Cassel. “The Raiders are lucky to have him. You have to pay attention to him when he’s on the field. He can take on double teams, he can do some wonderful things in moving bodies around in there because he’s such a big body himself.”

When asked about the Raiders defense, Seymour was the first thing Johnson mentioned.

“”For a guy that didn’t practice with them all week, to come in and make plays that’s definitely impressive,” said Johnson. “All those young guys get excited over there about every play they make. It’s definitely going to be a challenge for us.”

I'm more concerned about Flowers. ****in' KK was painting a fairly dark picture of his possible situation on the radio today.
We'll see.

That makes me very optimistic that he'll be ready to go on Sunday. Go Chiefs!

Flowers is irrelevant this weekend. Russell will overthrow the receiver AND the cornerback in one fell swoop.

If KK is leaning on the same inside sources that guaranteed him that Cassel would play in Baltimore, then I feel pretty good that Flowers is fine.

This: It wasn't a question of whether or not he'd play, it was a question of, "as a defender expected to tackle, hit, and reach up, is putting a liquid band aid on him and getting him in there at all costs the wisest long-term move"?
I'll trust the doctors and the Coach on this. They did the right thing last week, and I expect they'll do it again.

It's just thought of ****ing up the one Ace and sure thing we have on defense is a little unsettling.

That's all.

I'm sure they'll do the right thing with him. I'm very confident in our coach.

Haven't you heard? It doesn't matter if Flowers plays or not. We suck equally with or without him.

Yeah, he would have absolutely NO impact whatsoever against a laser-guided powerhouse like Russel.
