Are there any actual lawyers on ChiefsPlanet?

I think I need to hire a lawyer for my 16 year old son who got a speeding ticket for going 34 in a 20 school zone.

It is a church school that he didn't realize was a school, and on the description on the ticket, the officer clocked him before he was even 10 feet into the school zone. And he was sitting there waiting for a high school kid, because high school had just let out. I have literally driven down this road over 50,000 times in my life, at all times of day and year, and have never seen cop checking speed in this school zone.

The cop could have seen how nervous my son was, and been understanding about his lack of knowledge of the school, but he wasn't.

So, I need to hire a lawyer, and thought I would ask here first.

If you are not a lawyer, maybe you could recommend someone.

Thanks,

What are they threatening to do him? It's only 14 over.

is it a speeding ticket, or a c&i?

Dude. The kid was speeding. If your kid went to that school you would want the speed limits enforced. Make the kid pay the ticket, learn a lesson, and maybe he might slow down in the future. Cop was just doing his job.

You'll never get a break from speeding in a school zone. Pay the fine and move on.

seems pretty clear cut to me. just because he didn't notice he was in a school zone doesn't mean he's not guilty of speeding. sorry for the lack of sympathy, but just because you didn't mean to break the law doesn't mean that you didn't actually break it.

i don't see any valid reason that you would be able to fight that.

do you want a lawyer to get up and say "sure, the kid was breaking the law, but the cop was a d!ck about it"?

Cops are little more than state-sanctioned thieves. This is what they do, and the deck is completely stacked in their favor. If you hire a lawyer, you're going to be out legal fees and your kid still gets fined.

If there are any lawyers here I have real problems I could use help with.

Have you started a thread about it yet?

I know, I just think "faulty equipment" would look better than a speeding ticket when the insurance guy looks at his record.

And, sure, he was speeding, but sometimes people deserve a break.

You can do what I always do.

Send in the ticket with a photocopy of the amount requested. A nice profane little note wouldn't hurt either.
