How much "legitimate" work do you get done in a day?

I'm not talking about sitting there with an Excel spreadsheet open staring off into space or bullshitting with co-workers during a "meeting". I mean honest productive work.

As little as possible.

Like I'm going to leave hard lasting evidence of that in the form of a forum post.

I get a fair amount done in a day, but my production is tied to deadlines.

I don't get as much done as I could some days, but make up for it on the short, hard deadlines that require long, braincrushing hours.

I'm looking at 3 spreadsheets and a medium sized pile this week, that I'm finding trouble getting seriously motivated to complete.

I travel a shit ton.

When I travel, I'm working 12-16 hours/day. In the office - real work, maybe 4 hours.

suds79 10-28-2009 11:08 AM

It depends on the day for me. My job is up & down. Some days maybe it's 7 hours or so. And somedays I could seriously go home after about an hour.

Iowanian 10-28-2009 11:10 AM

I struggle the most with production on the non-billable days, when I'm writing checks, fighting with taxes, paperwork, insurance and other crap I hate doing that only costs money.

I always come through when I've got something due. I figure I deserve the slower days to make up for some of the nights I don't see my kids.

the Talking Can 10-28-2009 11:18 AM

almost none

i wish i had the option for to work a 4 day 9-10 hr schedule

i'd be happier and more productive and efficient, i think...

seclark 10-28-2009 11:21 AM

What do you do that makes you travel so much?

I work 10 hours a week. It's mostly 5 hours on Tuesday and 5 hours on Thursday. I'd say my average production is at 80%. That's because we have downtimes, and no one comes to my study seminars.

You would think, but I do that now. With my commute in/out it's like working 12 hr days.

by the time I get home at night, I'm tired as hell with no motivation to do anything around the house and go to bed really early.

Then on the day off that I have, I find myself catching up on all the thing I put off during the week.

There is pros/cons to the 8hr and 12hr days.

I own, or having ownership in 3 different companies. I'm out checking on the assets, or clients/suppliers just about every week.

I'm generally in Chicago, Houston, Dallas, St. Louis, North Little Rock, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis or Birmingham.

I've got this..kind of. We do what is called a 9/80 schedule where in 2 weeks, we work 80 hours in 9 days (this equals eight 9 hour days and one eight hour day). Fridays alternate from being off to working only 8 hours. I love this schedule because I rarely have to use vacation to get things done like appointments, etc since I can just use my off Friday. Also, if I want to take a short trip, that is easy to do too without using vacation. The only drawback is that the weeks with our working Fridays seem exceedingly long. :D

Oh, and the extra hour at work is unnoticable.
