NFT: A little excitement at work today

Came in early for work to find the parking garage surrounded by police cars, security vehicles, fire engines, cranes, skip loaders. Found a parking place and then noticed there was a lot of snow and debris on the ground floor of our three story parking garage.

Got into work to find out that part of the third deck had collapsed at 0530 this morning. Shook up the guys in our building across the street.

I managed to get up to the fifth floor on our building and take the attached picture. That's about a 30' diameter hole in the parking garage and yes, it does go all the way through to the ground level.

I was thinking, if it had collapsed say four hours later, that bottom section and half the second deck would have been full of cars.

Needless to say, we won't be in the garage anytime soon.

It was totally worth it.

Glad no one was hurt, that could have been bad at 7:30-8am

Would I be correct to assume that there was a mountain of snow on that section, kind of like the one next to the hole?

Phobia 02-16-2010 06:52 PM

Amazing. Yeah - presume it's snow-mound related. Sure hope that snow-contractor's liability insurance premium is paid.

That was a controlled demolition. Snow doesn't get hot enough to melt concrete.

I can't swear to it, but I do know there was a mountain of snow down on the ground floor (along with a bunch of concrete).

Yeah, the attitude at work was a mixture of "Wow, that's cool" and "Holy crap, that could have been me."

Was that the one in Annapolis I read about on the Sun today? They didn't have a cool picture like yours.
