NT needed, not much to choose from

With Wilfork, Franklin and Pickett now officially off the market, who else is left that we could go after. Statistically speaking Edwards is the worst 3-4 NT against the run, at least according to ProFootballFocus.com. Either way, with our 31st ranked run defense, it needs to be addressed and I'd prefer they do it prior to the draft so we don't feel the need to reach for Dan Williams, like I'm afraid we will.

Outside of Jason Ferguson, who is 35 and coming off a quad injury, there aren't really any experienced 3-4 NT types out there that I'm aware of. The only heavy 315+ guys I can think of are Fred Robbins and Jimmy Kennedy.

Kennedy is intriguing to me simply because of the huge amounts of potential he had coming out of college and since he actually played really well against the run and got quite a bit of play time backing up Pat Williams.

Kennedy had 275 snaps, compared to Williams' 494 snaps. Kennedy had about 70 snaps less than Ryan Pickett and according to the link above, actually played really well against the run.

I know that Minny's GM has said he wants to keep him, so he may not make it out of there as Pat Williams doesn't have a lot of tread left on his tires.

Fred Robbins was demoted last season for a time and is about to turn 33, but it sounds like the Giants defensive unit was pretty dysfunctional overall last year. He didn't fair as well against the run as Kennedy. He was listed on another site as being a likely Patriots target.

Anyone else?

Draft a NT and start him from day one.

I like Kennedy. Thought he played well for the Vikings in games that I saw.

Probably gonna have to draft somebody though.

How about switching back to the 4-3..... you know, run a scheme that fits the personnel?

Goldmember 02-25-2010 10:55 AM

IMO, NT is the most important key to the Chiefs defense. Without a top notch guy in there, the pass defense and run defense will continue to struggle. They have to find a guy in the draft. I still think it was wrong to go to a 3-4 defense when you have guys that were recently drafted for a 4-3.

Hope Mount Cody falls to our 2nd pick and draft him.

I don't think the Chiefs can risk waiting until the 2nd round to draft a NT. I'm not happy about it but they really don't have any choice but to draft Williams with the first pick. It's way too high for him but they have to have a NT. I could actually see them taking two NT's in this year's draft. One in the first and BPA in the 4th or 5th if there were any left. I believe demand is going to out weigh supply with so many teams going to the 3-4.

If we draft a 3-4 NT in the first I wash my hands of Pioli.

Reaching for need is not the way to succeed.

Indeed.

I'm starting to wonder if we might have to move up slightly to get him. Because if he's gone by the time our 2nd rolls around, we're screwed.

MOhillbilly 02-25-2010 12:18 PM

screw it. we go with the youngins we have and see what the new dc, dline coach can do.

The Bad Guy 02-25-2010 12:23 PM

I think now you almost have to draft Cody with 2a if he is there.

Sfeihc 02-25-2010 12:51 PM

The Chiefs really need two NTs. With the lack of depth in this draft and free agent market guys like Williams, Cody, Thomas and Troup should all see an inflated draft position if they test out well. If the Chiefs spent their first four draft picks on linemen(2 OL and 2 NT) I wouldn't mind at all.
