Barnes gets second crack

The Raiders re-signed offensive tackle Khalif Barnes to a one-year deal, his agent told The Chronicle an hour ago while I was driving (managed to pull over and Tweet, the blog had to wait).

So begins the Raiders' foray into the uncapped version of free agency. Maybe this time they'll actually give Barnes a chance to compete.

Last season, they never gave Barnes a real chance to compete with left tackle Mario Henderson, who led the NFL in sacks allowed. After breaking his ankle in camp, Barnes came back to play briefly at right tackle -- a position he hadn't played since college.

Right tackle Cornell Green is a free agent. If Henderson is to remain the left tackle, maybe they should move Barnes to the right side now and give him an entire offseason and training camp to get used to the position so he stands a better chance.

Of course, that's assuming they pass on an offensive tackle in the first round as they did last year when the need was just as glaring.
