inherited a hog from a stoopid hippy
:grr:Ive been feeding 14% protien hog starter pellet. Doesnt seem to be gaining like i want. Problem is the hippy who gave me the hog said A) he picked out the runt. B) he picked out a female. C) he picked a hampshire crossed on god knows what.
He also thought he was gonna keep the hog int he middle of spfld. next to a goon friend of mineROFL. So my questions are. Should i just cut my loses butcher the piglet now and purchase a replacement to fatten up till winter? Or switch feed? (people at the feed store have ZERO clue) |
how old is said swine?
what's she weigh, now? sec |
If it fits a 22-1/2" Weber, then "cut" your losses.

Buy a replacement, keep em both.
You don't want to go into the hog biz, but you don't want to waste your time either. Might as well feed both. My kids and I made some maple syrup this spring. I'll trade ya for some bacon. |

The A-hole in me wants to just shoot her, eat, and tell hippy she escaped or something. The good guy wants to have a sit down and see. Hippy sees this hog as a friend/pet not an investment.:spock: shit you not. |
Why feed her.....grind her up in the sausage then buy another. We have found that you can usually buy a leftover 4-h pig cheaper than you can feed them out. I usually butcher one pig every fall about fair time and then a 4-h steer that we don't sell. I have 3 freezers that are about full right now on account that I put 23 chickens in there last fall also....hot sausage is the best for those home grown piggies!
