Omaha

I’m thinking about a possible move to Omaha from Atlanta. What are the pros and cons?

ArrowheadHawk 03-22-2010 09:06 AM

Omaha is a hell of a lot colder than Atlanta.

Hmmm...there's not really a lot of overwhelming pros about living here...housing prices are decent and traffic isn't terrible, you can get to just about any part of the city in 20 minutes or less most times of the day. On the flip side there aren't really any overwhelming cons either. The winter is going to be worse than in Atlanta, and some of the taxes are higher than other places in the midwest.

If you could be more specific about what you'd like to know more about I'd be more than happy to answer any questions.

Pro: Nebraska has the lowest insurance of the lower 48 states.

Con: Very limited sea turtle research jobs.

Here's a link to a great Omaha message board, there is a ton of good information about what's going on here. You can also ask questions on the Welcome to Omaha page without registering.

I'm getting ready to head out for the day, I'll check back here this afternoon but feel free to PM me anytime with any questions.

Stay away from North Omaha, I'll tell you that right now.

Pros- excellent outdoorsman-type activities, fairly low crime rate, good community involvement and an excellent place to raise a family.

Cons- cold weather, (this was one of the worst years ever) the husker kool-aid and if you have allergy problems you can look forward to daily snot activites in the late summer months.

I like it here, our job market is fairly good too, (especially I.T. jobs).

Feel free to pm me as well.

NE Omaha is a little rough, and you'll want to avoid SE unless you're fluent in your Espanol. District 66 (west central Omaha) has the best schools but you'll pay more for a home in that area and our property taxes are a bit higher. Ralston, Papillion/LaVista, Millard and Bellevue all have good schools as well. Omaha Public Schools aren't terrible, but they of course have the most funding issues since they serve the more economically depressed parts of town.

IMO the best places to be are either SW Omaha or Sarpy County.

lol...there are some rough areas up that way, but it's not like you're going to get killed if you drive down the wrong street.

Omaha...

just kidding.. i wanted to say it before someone else did... honestly, i have no idea, I'm not from there.

Papillion was recently #3 on the top-50 best places to live in US News. I live near there, work in Bellevue at Offutt AFB, NE. Be glad to converse with you on specifics. Good schools, bad schools, taxes, etc. Papillion is also the location of the new Omaha Royals stadium being built.

I work at the base but live in Iowa, on purpose. Property taxes is the reason. For instance, I have a cabin on 5 acres in the woods and hills and pay about 2800 in property taxes on a 250,000 valued home. My old boss had a 300,000 value home and paid over 6000 in property tax in Bellevue, (Sarpy County).

Free orgies with Gonzo. That's a plus.

ClearmontChief 03-22-2010 09:42 AM

Iowa schools are excellent too. Top 3-5 in the Nation. (Iowa Basic Skills Test sound familiar).

As others have said stay out of North Omaha. South Omaha is getting pretty rough too...as is some places in CouncilTucky.
