I think you misread that as a typo when it isn't. The writer isn't saying

"fans don't know that starters play sparingly."

The writer is saying

"Fans don't like four exhibition games now that starters play sparingly."

Yeah, the writer wrote exactly what he meant. He didn't mistype the word "know", he really did mean to use "now".

They should add ONE game to the regular season and reduce preseason by two games. Seems to be a happy medium.
