San Diego (more specifically.. North County area)

Going to be in San Diego this weekend and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions regarding things to see or places to eat... I'll be in Carlsbad/Rancho Santa Fe area...

I'm visiting a lady friend and would REALLY like to take her someplace she has never been... so I need help regarding cool but possibly somewhat obscure places ... HOPEFULLY in the North County region. (Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, etc)

Ok Planet.. what ya got for me?

Phobia 10-28-2010 10:14 PM

Man, you gotta get you some BBQ out there. Just about every street corner has amazing stuff. Stuff yourself fat.

AustinChief 10-28-2010 10:33 PM

THANKS PHIL! I'll get right on that! :D

DOH! Well, that too... but think more along the lines of restaurants or just something really cool. There is a drive-in movie place but apparently not anywhere near her.

Dick's Last Resort

Dick’s Last Resort: An Imperfect Place in a Perfect World

From Rug-rats to Old Farts, from High-Class to No-Class, from the Top of the Food Chain, to the Bottom of the Barrel, it’s FUN FOR ALL AND ALL IN FUN FOR THOSE WHO DARE TO ENTER! Sit back and watch, or join in the fun. Dick’s has always been known for its outrageous, surly, energetic waitstaff who inflict humor upon our guests. Our atmosphere makes everyone feel like they’re temporarily breaking all the rules...and getting away with it. We have live music every night featuring questionable bands playing classic rock and there’s never a cover charge. If you’ve got any talent, git up on stage and sing with the band. Dance anywhere ya want - except... don’t shake ya booty on top of our fine tables and chairs. They’ve lasted 20 yrs, and we’ll use 'em for 20 more if we can. You may end up wearing a 2ft tall paper hat complete with a humorous slogan, or doused in a sea of napkins. There’s never a dull moment in this 3-ring circus which is exactly how we earned our infamous reputation.

Places with Good Food Are A Dime A Dozen

No white tablecloths here...this is a down and dirty joint! Dick’s has gone back to the basics (basic caveman). We make our food from scratch and it’s served up in big stainless steel buckets... Big Sloppy Ribs, Juicy Honey-Roasted Chicken, Succulent Crab Legs, and generous servings of Fried Catfish... which call for the use of one’s fingers rather than silverware. Don’t worry, the servers will tie on a plastic bib to alleviate any fears from possible spills... nothing puts a stop to the protection of egotism and snobbery like a big, silly bib! Guests are pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality of our food and wide menu choices. Come and check it out for yourself!

WHAT YOU SEE AIN'T ALWAYS WHAT YOU GET!

Dick’s is committed to giving back to the community in which it resides. We sponsor several charity events throughout the year, and when appropriate, we close our store for major charity fundraisers. We are totally committed to the city in which we are located.

WHO THE HECK IS DICK?

Yes, there really was a Dick and his spirit rages on to inspire us to this day. Dick was a film producer whose claim to fame was making the movie "Hell’s Angels Forever." He breezed into Dallas to open a white tablecloth restaurant and an accompanying bar and grill in a historic building in the West End of downtown. Excavation on the restaurant site began and immediately there was a heap of trouble when the building’s key support wall collapsed. A shocked Dick felt desperate, for he hadn’t budgeted for construction delays. In fact, he already had eight people on the payroll, ready to open the new restaurant.

Dick wasn’t known as Slick Dick for nothing. He took advantage of a deal offered by a local realtor, leasing a 4,000 square foot storefront in the West End. Then, he opened a restaurant/bar to generate some cash while construction proceeded at the other site. Despite his financial bind, Dick’s sense of humor rallied to the occasion. He named the new bar "Dick’s Last Resort" because indeed, it was. And the rest, as they say, is history!

i wonder if you can eat sushi off a naked asian chic there?

WilliamTheIrish 10-29-2010 05:04 AM

PM 2bikemike. He's inland but knows all the favorites. I personally enjoyed Ichiban's in Mission Beach. Best sushi I've ever had.

If you see Roxanne there, tell her she still has my <3

I don't get up to North County much except for work.

Not sure what your looking for exactly but 2 places that I will go that are more north for me but southwest of where you'll be is Jakes or Posieden in Del Mar both ocean views.

Stone Brewery seems to be a popular spot. I have not been there but they do a good business. Might be more of a novelty. You can look them up on the internet.

If your flying in to Lindbergh around lunch time C-Level has good food and atmosphere they are right on San Diego Bay.

If your gonna be in the Gas Lamp area Downtown San Diego there are lots of great places. One thing we like to do is take people to the top of the Hyatt right next to Seaport Village. There is a nice bar up there and the views are incredible.

Like Irish said you can PM me if you have any questions or want more specific information.

Its a French restaurant. Really good food. Can be pricey.
In a nice location in Del Sur, which is not that far from where you will be.

Here is another place, The Chart House:

One in Encinitas.

There is Fidels:

Good Mexican food.

Just a few there. Really depends on how far south you want to go. If you want go farther south, say to Torrey Pines or La Jolla, there are other places I can recommend.

Also, Fish Market in Del Mar is good, and if Authentic Mexican is what you are craving Tony's Jacal in Del Mar is good as well!

Also, En Fuego in Del Mar is hoppin, good margies and tacos!

mesmith31 10-29-2010 09:45 AM

If you like burger places you have to check out Hodad's!
