Kansas City Chiefs Blitz Less Than Anyone In Football

So the Chiefs did that and were relatively successful against him in the loss. It's not just the Colts against whom the Chiefs are stressing coverage. ESPN's John Clayton included this nugget about the Chiefs defense in his latest column at ESPN.com. According to ESPN Stats & Information, the Chiefs have blitzed less than any team in football. Crennel has rushed an extra defender on only 18.9 percent of the pass plays. Last year, D-coordinator Clancy Pendergast blitzed on 32.4 percent of the pass plays, but quarterbacks had a 106.2 rating against Kansas City. This year, opponents are completing only 46.3 percent of their passes against Chiefs blitzes. That's nearly cutting your blitzes in half. It's apparently working considering the Chiefs brought back largely the same defense from last year (albeit a year older). If the last few years are any indication, the Chiefs are not a team that can consistently blitz the quarterback anyway so I've liked the defensive game plan to this point. It also highlights how much Tamba Hali is excelling. It seems simple but playing it safe and keeping the ball in front of you has worked well for the Chiefs. |
interesting

Nice to have a DC that knows something about what he is doing.

There's a difference between a dog (some teams use different terms) and a blitz. Tamba is the dog. He rushes the passer alot as a linebacker.

As long as its works and a Chiefs win.
|
If we stopped running more and threw the ball 30 yards or more down the field we would be 9-0 already...
|
And Cassel is the reason we cant blitz...
|
I don't think Crennel has ever really been that blitz-happy. I'd be curious to see how that compared to other defenses of his.

Parcells, Belichik, Crennel etc. all play that style of defense. Parcells was running cover 2 back in the 80's way before it was popularized. They like to play the run with 7, 2 gap up front, and drop everybody back to avoid giving up big plays and play good red zone D. Classic bend but don't break defense....give up 3 yards on the ground instead of penetrating trying to drop the back in the backfield...let the QB complete a 5 yard pass in front of the backers instead of selling out to the QB and giving something up down the field. If the linebackers and safeties are good tacklers it's very frustrating for opponents because they have to go on long drives to score.

Cool.
I get to be the first to point out the fact that this is a repost. http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=235929 |
