Bah! Browser Hijack!
This just started happening yesterday. I launch a browser (doesn't matter which one) and do a Google search. Start clicking on results and some of the results redirect to yellow pages, denver plastic surgeons, etc.
This is my work laptop which has Symantec installed, but nothing else. I downloaded AdAware, Hijack This, Malwarebytes and ran them all in Safe Mode (and rebooted each time). Each said that they found creepy crawlies, but the browser issues remains. Any ideas? |
I've had this happen before. It's some kind of google search hijacker. I tried a few times to get rid of it, but couldn't figure it out.
I just happened to have purchased a new hard drive before that started happening, so I had a proper excuse to rebuild my machine. |

follow the instructions in the Malware section and it will be gone. |
You need to delete the system32 folder on your computer. Malware almost always plants itself there and it is the quickest fix available where you don't have to install or download anything else onto your computer.

vicious. though, yes, i'd say that if you deleted it, you definitely would not be able to get any more malware, seeing as your machine wouldn't boot. |
check your hosts file for entries that do not belong... proxy settings..
can you post your hijackthis log? |
Looks like Malwarebytes just put out a new update and it caught the nasty little ****. That sucked. WTF would someone do that in the first place? Like I'm going to say, "Gee, I really didn't want to know about plastic surgery in Denver, but now I think I'll get my wife's tits done!"

COOL WEB SHREDDER FOR BROWSER HIJACKS
oops sorry for caps: here: http://www.spychecker.com/program/coolwebshredder.html |
Download HijackThis:
http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/ Download and install HijackThis. You will need to download both the Installer and Executable files. 1. Download Installer (See links above) 2. Download Executable (See links above) Once installed, open HijackThis by clicking Start > Program Files > HijackThis and click the button labeled "Do a system scan only". Once the scan is complete, click the AnalyzeThis button. A web page will open containing helpful information regarding HijackThis. Once the scan is complete, the scan button will read "Save log". You may save the log file to your PC. Once you select where you would like to save the file, it will open in your system's default text editor. Typically this application is Notepad. Copy the results and paste them in this thread or in the "Offficial Malware/Virus" thread. Wait for someone to tell you what entries to delete and what to keep. |
