Does Anyone Mod Their Smartphone

I have owned the Samsung Vibrant since the day of release, a little over a year ago. It gets a little buggy every now and then so I reboot to manufacturer's specs and then download my apps from my backup (takes about 10 minutes) and I get stellar speed and GPS lock afterward for about 5-7 months. Then I have to start the cycle again.

I am wondering if anyone has modded an android smartphone? I update my G1 from Donut to Eclair with Cyanogen and had no problems. I want to update my Vibrant from Froyo to Gingerbread but I understand there is still a problem with the GPS (which I use a lot). Has anyone here upgraded to Gingerbread? Positives... Negatives?

I'm running gingerbread on my Evo right now. I've gone through about 8 different Roms now and am currently using one called Synergy which runs 2.3.3.

I've only been running this particular rom for 48 hours and finally have it set to where I am comfortable with it. I'll run it for a few weeks until the next big development or until I get bored and want something to play with.

The only problem I have had with the GPS is that my weather app tells me I'm in a neighboring city. I'm going to play with the navigation over the next few days.

You don't need to mod, you are scheduled to receive it. My Vibrant has been forgotten since Android released about 25 other phones since mine.

I was thinking about rooting it, but I'm afraid I will brick it.

Plus, I'd really like to get the HTC Sensation.

Could be a stupid question, but what do you use to backup your phone? I thought I could do it through HTC sync, but don't really see where to do it.

Not stupid. Do you mean backup the downloaded programs or backup the system itself?

The programs I use Astro File Manager, the system I use Odin and Nandroid.

I have Astro, but only use for it file management....need to check on the backup portion. I'm mainly concerned with backing up my stuff/contacts...thanks!

Contacts and Calendar. Now that I have downloaded Music Beta, I am sure it will be integrated as well.
