Family sues LAPD for $120 Million, after their kid dies from "suicide by cop"

(obligatory respect for the dead note) It is sad that someone, even someone responsible for their own demise dies, its a tragedy. (/obligatory respect for the dead note)

Abdul Arian's Family Files $120 Million Lawsuit Against LAPD For Shooting Death Of Son

I know the family is sad, I know they may be out of their mind, but still, even given their kid got shot by the cops, I can't believe they filed this lawsuit. This is crazy.

Mentally disturbed (I assume, you have to be nuts or suicidal to do this) kid is being asked by the cops to pull over for reckless driving. He refuses, and runs, big classic police chase starts. Then, the kid calls 911 and tells the 911 operator he's got a gun. 911 operator pleads with him to surrender because he doesn't want him to get hurt. Stupid kid says he's not scared, the police who are chasing him will get hurt. This information is probably relayed to the cops chasing him.

Quote:

"I have a gun," was one of the statements police quoted the man as saying.

"'I've been arrested before for possession of destructive devices, I'm not afraid of cops," he said.

"If they pull their guns, I'm gonna have to pull my gun out on them," he was also quoted as saying.
(he does not have a gun) He stops on the freeway, almost a dozen cops stop, guns drawn. Does the kid get out and get on the ground to surrender? Nope, in the dead of night, where you can't really see clearly, the kid starts running away, but several times he turns towards the cops and points something at them (keep in mind he already told 911 he had a gun). It almost looks like a shooting stance while retreating. (as it turns out, he's probably pointing a cell phone at them) Cops obviously think he's got a gun and open fire, and he goes down.

Days later, the family sues the city of Los Angeles.... for $120 Million Dollars.

That clip starts to get serious after the 2 minute mark.

(note: someone is getting shot in that clip. (but the clip ends right before he goes down) Don't click if it upsets you. However, this isn't "Faces of death", there's no visible blood, no gore, and people who love seeing gore would be sorely disappointed, this is a very far, overhead, fuzzy shot from a helicopter. The reason why its relevant at all is to clinically show, without much visible violence, why the cops obviously would have to shoot this idiot)

hopefully the judge gives his family capitol punishment then, they raised a person like that and are now trying to profit from it? When it's obviously his fault? You gotta be kidding me. Why would this even go to court?

Anyone can file a lawsuit. It'll get tossed though.

Hopefully the family will have to pay lawyer fees for the city.

Somebody will take the case and waste everyones time and money.

Sorry, kid. You asked for it, you got it. Run and you'll get tackled and maybe 'Rodney Kinged'. Start aiming like you're shooting and you'll get an ass full of lead.

Bump 04-18-2012 07:54 PM

ya, that public attorney is thinking he might have hit the big time, lol.

WTF, the video ended before anything good happened.

BigMeatballDave 04-18-2012 07:59 PM

I'm trying to understand what the police did wrong.

Good for the cops.. textbook.. Dumbshit deserved it for pointing it like a gun at them..
I agree, family should have to pay for the city attorney fee..

Some guy just committed suicide by cop here the other night. Then, the next day, a mom taking her baby to the pediatrician got shot to death and her 3 day old baby was kidnapped. I kind of thought I moved to a nice place, but I guess not.

Bugeater 04-18-2012 10:23 PM

LAPD should send the family a bill for $120M for the service they did to society.

Phobia 04-18-2012 11:35 PM

Wait - it's California. Some jury will probably triple it.
