Help with rusted grill grates

So, my dad gave me his grill because he never uses it, and it was an upgrade over what I had. Problem is, he never cleaned it or took care of it, so the grates are all rusty. I used a wire brush and some sandpaper and got off all the flakes that I could, but it still has that rusty coloration. What do I do now? Just buy new grates? Season over the rust?

Just buy a new one, Mr. Cheapskate. The grill was free.

Cook on it. If it doesn't come off with sandpaper, a steak isn't gonna take it off.

Fire it up.

Fire it up and spray lemon juice all over it.
