Apathy and the future of the chiefs

Well, guys, for me, the unthinkable has happened. I've become apathetic to the Kansas City Chiefs. I'm 45 years old. I bought my first season tickets when I was just 22 years old in 1989. I was a kid the last time the futility of the chiefs were at the level it is now, and I was away at college for a few years in there as well. I never understood why nobody cared about the chiefs back then. But of course, I was a kid and they were my hometown team, the only NFL team I'd ever seen live. We didn't have ESPN, NFL Network, etc. There wasn't really any other team to follow. So, if you were a big fan, you were either an old person that was still clinging on to the teams of the 60's, a kid that was a fan simply because the chiefs were all they knew, or a person that went out to meet a few friends at the stadium. But, for the most part, the greater community of KC really didn't give a squat about the chiefs. Of course, that all changed when Marty and Carl came to town. That one move set in motion, a passion that lasted almost 20 years. Well, I fear we are back to the level we were in 1987, if not, were extremely close. I fear that if wholesale changes aren't made right away, we will be talking about the chiefs losses with a chuckle rather than an upset rant. I fear people will go to games, but only if they get free tickets, and really only to take their kid. I fear that without a big move statement by Clark Hunt in the next week or two, we will be back to 1987. Its sad. It's what it is I guess, but I didn't even watch the game yesterday. I DVR'd it, heard the score, then erased it. I'm not young enough to go to games and yell so lound that I have no voice on monday. I don't wear all red, have stickers on my car, etc. anymore. You know what though, I would love to go to the games and revel in the loudness that was once the loudest stadium in the NFL. I'd love to go to a prime time home game and see the smoke from 10,000 grills and smokers hovering over the parking lot. But, I'm afraid those days are gone and not only are they gone, but because the chiefs have lost an entire generation of young fans to playoff win free football, it isn't something that will be able to turn around easily.

Chuckles replaced rants years and years ago.

The Chiefs suck and will continue to suck until;

- The front office is gutted and started fresh
- The entire coaching staff is gutted and started fresh
- We draft a franchise QB in the first round

No more NE retreds (I fear Mangennie [sp?] is the next HC) or back up QBs from other team's rosters.

No more retention of coaches when we change staffs.

Until these things happen we will continue down the road of mediocrity and despair.

I'm sorry to hear about that. It sounds like you got the worst of both worlds.

Honestly, apathy may be a good thing for me. I used to care too much about the Chiefs, and a loss would ruin my Sunday. Now a loss is just an empty soda can falling down a bottomless pit, making no impact, while a win produces a minor smile and acknowledging nod. I can save my emotions for things that matter more.

I can't even remember all of the times I cried over this team growing up.

All of the emotional investment I felt just kind of evaporated a few years ago, and most of the time it feels like I'm still a fan solely to witness the perpetual train wreck.

This at the same time my favorite college team has gone 6-37 over the past three and a half seasons. I watch games between good or even competent teams and I barely recognize what's happening.
