Mock (2/4)

It's a little more detailed now that I'm using Over the Cap's Salary Cap Calculator.

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs extend Alex Smith 4 years, $60m ($36m guaranteed), OLB Justin Houston 5 years, $42m ($21m guaranteed), and S Eric Berry 6 years, $38m ($18m guaranteed).

2. The Chiefs trade Brandon Flowers to the Oakland Raiders for a 2nd round pick.

3. The Chiefs restructure WR Dwayne Bowe, OLB Tamba Hali, CB Sean Smith, and K Ryan Succop.

4. The Chiefs resign WR Dexter McCluster to a 4 year, $13m deal ($4m guaranteed), OG Geoff Schwartz to a 3 year, $6m deal.

5. The Chiefs place a 6th round tender on Jerrell Powe.

7. The Chiefs re-sign S Quentin Demps and LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals.

8. The Chiefs let walk: WR Kyle Williams, OT Brandon Albert, OG Jon Asamoah, DE Tyson Jackson, OLB Frank Zombo, ILB Akeem Jordan, S Kendrick Lewis, S Husain Abdullah

9. The Chiefs cut: TE Anthony Fasano, ILB Derrick Johnson, CB Dunta Robinson

10. The Chiefs sign WR Jeremy Maclin (Eagles) to a 3-year, $15m deal ($1m guaranteed), OT Khalif Barnes (Raiders) to a 1 year, $2m deal, S Chris Clemons (Dolphins) to a 4-year, $20m deal ($4m guaranteed).

On with the show:

1.23. CB Jason Verrett, TCU

Verrett projects, really, to be the next Brandon Flowers. Sized at about 5'10", he possesses the same physical dimensions with Flowers, along with a sterling record as a physical, fast corner that the Chiefs can pair with Sean Smith in 2014, and with potentially Marcus Cooper or Ron Parker as they continue ascending in 2015.

Ultimately, you need players right for your scheme. Brandon Flowers was drafted and served primarily as a Cover 2 corner. He had some success in Crennel's bend-but-don't-break, but it's clear he's not cut out for the high-pressure island that Sutton prefers to run. It's likely that both of the team's starting corners will need to be replaced, but for now the Chiefs are taking a size/scheme/age/cap-friendly upgrade, and netting a 2nd rounder in return.

2.36 (from OAK). TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Washington

Seferian-Jenkins is looking more and more like he's going to slip a bit to the 2nd round as Amaro and Ebron suck all the oxygen out of the 1st round for TEs. This would be a great coup for the Chiefs, as a physical wonder at TE who needs help with his route-running is exactly the kind of talent you hope to land here.

3.87. DE Kelcy Quarles, South Carolina

Quarles needs to work on his ground game, no question, but where he really sets himself apart is his relentless passrushing. He stacked up 9.5 sacks last season from the interior position. He is this year's Derek Wolfe, and should spend the offseason battling with Allen Bailey and Mike Catapano to replace Tyson Jackson at DE.

4.119. OLB James Gayle, Virginia Tech

Gayle has outstanding size and measurable, plus he had bloodlines in the NFL. He would be a great talent to groom behind Hali and Houston.

5.151. ILB Christian Kirksey, Iowa

With the exit of Derrick Johnson, the Chiefs are going to need somebody adept in coverage and reading plays. Kirksey is an outstanding coverage 'backer, and is almost Kuechly-esque in his ability to cover ground.

6.177. ILB Andrew Jackson, Western Kentucky

A physical wrecking ball of a player; the Chiefs need somebody more physical to dominate the line of scrimmage behind their DL.

6.183. CB Kendall James, Maine

A 5'11" corner with 4.3 speed, Dorsey takes a shot here on a developmental prospect.

Flowers is not a scheme fit. And he can net us a high-rounder in return from a corner-hungry team like the Fade.

DJ, well... he was free to cut. He costs us not a single dollar if we cut him.

And cutting DJ is not worth keeping McCluster. **** that midget.

Is he worth cutting to land Clemons? Maclin?

We wouldn't need to if YOU'D STOP ****ING EXTENDING HOUSTON THIS YEAR.

LMAO

Business decision. You sign him for $6m/year now, or $10m/year next year.

The Bad Guy 02-04-2014 05:30 PM

You're not restructuring Flowers and Succop again. If you're asking Succop to restructure he should just be cut.

The Bad Guy 02-04-2014 05:31 PM

They aren't cutting DJ, who has a team friendly deal.

Flowers isn't getting traded either.

Why not? And why?

Why are you pushing more of Succop's money into the future? Same for Flowers. Restructuring guys year after year is never smart business and will bite you in the long run.

I'd see about replacing Succop in the draft. There's about a million in cap savings and when guys from college are emerging all over the league as kickers, Succop hasn't been lights out enough that his job is secure.

The Bad Guy 02-04-2014 05:50 PM

I'd let Flowers play out this year, but next year he'd be gone when you can save over 7.5

Extend Berry, Alex, and cut bait with Dunta.

Fair point.
