A Super Bowl series of downs that deserves more discussion.

Amid all of the fun and glory, I keep thinking about the 3rd and goal where Damien snuck the ball in over the goal line, and that series of downs.

That was a pretty amazing play when you think about it. We had a bunch of great momentum after the long Watkins catch, had second down on the four yard line after a six-yard Mahomes run, and then Patrick got completely stuffed on an option run on second down. I remember being very optimistic on second down, and then all of a sudden it was 3rd and goal from the five.

Third and goal from the five is not an easy ball placement. It's too far to run, and it's too short to run your full route tree. That second down play was brutal, losing a yard.

Of course, we have Patrick Mahomes and Damien Williams, so it all worked out fine.

But even at that, it was close. It was a cat whisker away from being fourth and goal at the two inch line. If you go for that, it's for the game, or you kick a chip shot field goal and tie it up. I think we would have gone for it, given the team's success in short-yardage situations, but that would have been some drama. Move over, Bart Starr and Ice Bowl.

What do you think we would have called on fourth and inches?

But anyway, my point is that converting third and goal from the five is pretty hard, yet they managed to do it.

love me some checkdowns in the flat

Andy said he would have gone for it. Man what a moment that would have been. I wonder if he calls the QB sneak on 4th and inches. They probably wouldn't expect it.

4th n goal at the 1 inch line, Reid calls Qb sneak. Guaranteed. He hasnt called it since the injury, and the Niners would not be looking for that.

Mahomes scores his second rush TD of the game, and is the unanimous mvp of the game.

RPO involving Sherman out front, be my guess.

Dropkick

We were running the option a lot, so I think it would've been that. But I think Kelce would have been parallel in the end zone waiting for a pass. That's my theory.

4th and an inch, you’d be moronic to kick the FG. Gives the 49ers 2 plus minutes and all time outs to get into FG range. If you score(we would have), great. If not, all the pressure in the world to mount a time milking drive would be on Jimmy G from his own inch line. Baring a complete collapse, the Chiefs would’ve gotten the ball back in good field position, needing only a FG to tie and force OT. To the never ending gratitude of my life span, D Will got the TD.

Here's a breakdown of the whole drive:

Yeah, I probably would have passed out as they broke huddle and approached the line on 4th and goal. So I'm glad it didn't come to that.

Reid said he had a pretty good play call that he would’ve called had it been fourth down

TwistedChief 02-07-2020 04:24 PM

If we did anything but a QB sneak, Reid is insane. It would’ve been the most ironic TD in Chiefs history.

TLO 02-07-2020 04:26 PM

Chris Jones jump pass to Deon Yelder, obviously.

Megatron96 02-07-2020 04:28 PM

QB sneak. Highest percentage play from a few inches away, plus all the ball has to do is break the plane.

I like the package that has Kelce as wildcat.
Reid also said the Rose Bowl formation is a package with several options. I think that he would have come back in that formation and ran something different out of it.
