NFL sets 2021 salary cap at $182.5 million.

Quote:

The NFL has set the 2021 salary cap at $182.5 million, sources confirmed to The Athletic.

The league informed teams last month that the cap floor would be $180 million, $5 million above the floor that was negotiated last summer after factoring expected revenue losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new league year and free agency are set to open March 17.

This is a developing story. More to come.

Going to be a lot of vets making much lower wages than they normally would for 2021.

Ouch for some vets

wazu 03-10-2021 09:00 AM

If I remember, Veach said we'd be fine as long as it was $185M. So I guess we're just a tad less than fine.

Extend Mathieu.
Restructure Mahomes, Jones, Kelce and Hill.
Lower first year cap hits on contracts longer than two years.
2022: Extend Hill. Cut Clark and Hitchens.

bowener 03-10-2021 09:46 AM

My understanding is that a lot of contracts will have voidable years to spread the cost for what is essentially 1-year deal. Once the TV contracts kick in all teams will be fine and able to cover any costs.

Their pretty close to okay though. Sausage's 1.5 mil coming off the cap for retirement gets them to 184 mil.

dlphg9 03-10-2021 10:50 AM

****ing owners are literal idiots.

CaliforniaChief 03-10-2021 10:50 AM

I'm not worried about Brett Veach, the man who turned $177 in cap space into a half-billion for Mahomes and a big deal for #95.

Umm huh? We’re $20 million over right now.

O.city 03-10-2021 10:52 AM

Why wouldn't the owners borrow to make it flat?

Uhhhh Sherman was a FA

Puts the Chiefs in pretty good shape. Current cap with rollover becomes $188M and some change.

Restructure Mahomes roster bonus
Extend Mathieu
Restructure Kelce roster bonus

And you're already in good shape.

Want to play big in FA? Restructure some of Jones' bonus and extend Hill 3-4 years.

They can get to 30-35M in room rather easily, and without kicking the can on anyone that is outside the core star group.
