Ever Sell an Engagement Ring?

You could spend weeks reading on the corruption of the diamond industry, but the bottom line is that diamond rings lose tons of value after they walk out the jewelry store. Pawn shops and "We Buy Gold and Gems" places won't pay more than the melt value for the metal and pennies on the dollar for the diamonds.

My girlfriend has two rings from a dirtbag ex that she's asked me to get rid of for her. One originally sold for $8500 and one for $1000. Any idea how I can get the most for these two rings?

I’d like to make you an offer but let me call in a buddy of mine first just to check everything out and make sure they are legit.

The original value is long gone. Getting 50% would be real good but that better be a nice diamond. Learn up on cut, color, clarity, etc. to learn the true "used" value. I'm not seeing any high numbers there based on the pics. And they are small. Small diamonds are cut enmasse usually without a care given to the C's. Auction will get you better worth sometimes. Now, if you just want the free money take what they offer.

The metal is worthless. The stones can be repurposed into another piece of jewelry with an all new meaning.

I flushed an engagement ring down a toilet once. It was simultaneously one of the dumbest and one of the most satisfying things I've ever done.

I worked at The Arizona Gold Exchange at 43rd & Northern back in the early/mid nineties, at this is pretty spot on.

Every ring bought or lost in pawn, unless it was super nice, was stripped of stones and the gold/etc melted down.

Good lord. Unless you're absolutely loaded, I have no idea how a ring could ever be worth $8,500.

SupDock 01-04-2022 08:50 PM

I think you are not correctly pricing the 8500 ring, unlesss it is platinum

Young and dumb comes to mind. It does look a little over priced though.

Bite your tongue.

(Though in fairness, this guy is loaded.)
