2022 NFL Schedule TV Rumors

Two MNF games airing simultaneously on ESPN/ABC? A Black Friday game for Amazon to create a de facto new Amazon Prime Day? JFC, make it stop.

2022 NFL Schedule Wish List

Every year before the Super Bowl, broadcast executives share their wish lists with NFL executives. Usually these meetings sound a lot alike — this year, all the TV network executives will try to convince the NFL that they need more Cowboys, Chiefs and Packers games (but only if Aaron Rodgers is still leading the offense in Green Bay).

Most years, the NFL agrees to adjust the schedule slightly to accommodate one or more of the league’s TV partners. Here are some schedule changes NFL fans should expect this season.

1. NFL on Christmas Day
Even though Christmas Day falls on a Sunday this year, the NFL plans to move all of its Sunday afternoon games to Christmas Eve, a Saturday. NBC will still have “Sunday Night Football” in prime time on Christmas night.

Judging from the success of Christmas Day’s Browns-Packers game on Fox and NFL Network last season, both CBS and Fox have asked the NFL to allow them to carry one Christmas Day game this year in the late afternoon window. Considering that Browns-Packers was the ninth most-watched program in all of television in 2021, it’s likely that one of them will get that window.

This is an important story to watch, since Christmas Day has long been associated with the NBA, and the NFL took a big chunk out of that league’s audience in 2021. It will be hard for the NFL to ignore those huge audiences.

2. ESPN/ABC doubleheader
When ESPN’s new NFL deal kicks in for the 2023 season, ABC will carry three “Monday Night Football” games each year. This year, during what the league and network are calling a “bridge season” that will sync up the contracts, ABC will carry one as sort of a quasi-doubleheader.

Here’s how it will work: One of the networks, either ABC or ESPN, will start its game early, probably around 7 p.m. ET. The other network will start its game later, after 8 p.m. ET. That means that the games will run side-by-side for at least a couple of hours. The NFL hasn’t yet decided when to schedule these games, but ESPN expects them to be within the first four weeks of the season.

Expect ESPN to use its Megacast strategy for its Week 1 “Monday Night Football” game.

3. International on ESPN+
As part of its bridge deal, ESPN’s streaming service ESPN+ will carry one international game exclusively. The NFL has five international games scheduled in 2022, including three in Britain, one in Germany and one in Mexico. The likelihood is that ESPN+ will wind up with one of the games from London.

4. Week 1 doubleheaders
The NFL loved starting the 2021 season with Fox and CBS each carrying two games in Week 1. Fox didn’t like that situation so much, especially since its Green Bay-New Orleans game was a blowout and did not rate well.

It took Fox weeks to get out of that hole, so it asked the NFL to move that double doubleheader schedule to later in the season. The NFL was cold to the idea. It was happy with the combined ratings points and seems unlikely to change that strategy for 2022.

5. Amazon Black Friday
Amazon has made a little bit of noise about scheduling a game on Black Friday. A Black Friday game would complement Amazon’s e-commerce business, and it would be similar to its Premier League strategy in Britain, where it carries all of the league’s Boxing Day games. But this store may be closed; the NFL has been lukewarm to this idea.

Hate all of the ideas.

1. Play on Sunday. Christmas day. **** the NBA.

2. wont one game pull away from the other?

3. Streaming services suck. The delay makes it feel like I am watching the game in the past.

4. Booo Joe Buck

5. No to that game. Iowa plays Nebraska on Black Friday. Nothing else should happen.

If it means more football on TV for me to watch, I am down for it.

Positive Vibes, my man.

If they just push the Super Bowl back another week, it will be on the Sunday before President’s Day.

Need a second bye week. 17-18 game schedules help the inferior teams. Maybe they avoid the injuries and the better teams don't.

Easy.

Move the SB back a week and then convert one of the 3 preseason games to the regular season.

Right now it's 3 + 17. If they make it 2 + 18 and move the SB back 1 week, you can get in 18 games and an two bye weeks for each team.

Yeah when they announced the 17 game schedule last year, tons of speculation talk on here about why the 2nd bye wasn't in there. Consensus, in here anyway, was it was being held back to offer the players when it goes to a 18th game.
